Ripple Editing in VS-11
Can someone explain what Ripple Editing is and how it can be used? Is there a tutorial somewhere?

The important thing to remember about ripple editing is that everything that is ripple enabled will be effected. On my slide shows I sometimes have to temporarily move a title so it won¡¦t be deleted. I also don¡¦t enable the music track ripple because it stretches across many slides. You have to think about which tracks you want controlled at the time of editing.

Ken, Jeff, Bob!
Thanks for the quick response. Answered my question perfectly.
Now, for a followup question....
I want to insert a transition [fade to black effect], followed by black background screen [color]---into the middle of my photo slide show project---onto which I want to add some lengthy text over the black background. I've got Ripple Editing turned on for all elements and have tried to add the "fade to black" transition effect between clips, but I keep getting a message stating that the transition effect is too long and that it will be automatically shortened (even though I have not specified a length for the transition effect...yet!)
I've even tried highlighting all the subsequent clips from the point where I want to insert the transition in hopes that I could slide them all further along down the time line as a group, thereby hoping to create a space for my transition effect and background color onto which to apply text. No dice! Video Studio 11 won't let me do that.
Is there any way of making this work?
I've put so many hours into this project that I'm terribly afraid of messing it up and having to start from scratch! I've even thought to turn off Ripple Editing at the point in question (middle of project), but I'm so freaked out about ruining my hard work!
Your advice would be greatly appreciated!
Bruce

Your problem has nothing to do with ripple editing.
You actually have specified the length for your transition. It is in File>Preferences. I believe the default is 1 second. Now, it's telling you your transition is too long and will be shortened because one of the two clips you are putting the transition between is shorter than 1 second.
You will either have to lengthen the adjoining clip or shorten your transition.

Jaeger...if you want to make a long addition to a project that is almost complete and you want to keep everything in sync...I'm afraid with such an addition at such a late stage something will have to give.
Usually it's Music track for me as that is the easiest to adjust later on and the track that blocks ripple editing (unless of course it all synced to the beat of the music in which case you'll have some work ahead of you)
So pick which ever will be the least work and turn ripple editing off for that track.
You should then be able to add colour or video with ripple editing enabled for the tracks that can move with the ripple.
