Which format for DVD recording, MPEG or AVCHD?

Post by fallenc »

HI,
I just bought a Sony CX7 but know very little about Video formats. I have recorded in a AVCHD format called SP on the CX7 and put together a film in VS11+, very good and easy. Problem is the files are very large and my computer freezes and crashes, I guess due to file size.

As I do not have a DVD burner in my computer(yet) is there actually any reason recording in AVCHD, I will still just burn it to a DVD, which is not capable of HD? Can I just not record in MPEG2 format as that is anyway the highest quality I can get on a DVD? According to this site: http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/aut ... /intro.htm max resolution is 720x480 for a DVD.

Of all the formats possible to burn a DVD in VS11+ which is appropriate for DVD?

I am lost, thanks for any help

I don't have High Definition but my thoughts are that one day in the future we all might be using high definition. I don't think it will happen very quickly and certainly it will not replace standard definition DVD as quickly as standard definition DVD replaced VHS.

With that thought in mind you might want to consider that at some future date you may want to redo all or some of your projects in High Definition.
It would therefore seem sensible to record in High Definition but create a standard definition copy from it.
