Does dv capture have to be done via VS9 ?

Post by uhill »

I captured DV via Windows Movie Maker. I have VS9 now. Should I recapture it or use the same file in VS9?

DV-AVI "capture" is a actually a transfer process. It's lossless no matter what application you use. Simialr to copying one file to another on your HD.

Windows Movie Maker creates WMV files, which are efficiently encoded, but not lossless. If you want the absolute best quality and still have the tapes, you should recapture. Otherwise, UVS will certainly let you use the WMV files you created with Windows Movie Maker.

Windows Movie Maker (at least the current version) lets you capture dv .avi's. If that's the format that was captured, they can be used "asis" in VS9 -- no need to re-capture. If a different format (other than dv .avi) was captured, then you could do better by re-capturing to dv .avi's...
