Ok we might be on to something here.....

I have put 3 commercial DVD movies in e.g. Pirates of the caribean etc and none of them have been recognised.

Furthermore when I look at "My Computer", H Drive is labelled "CD Drive (H)"

Probably not surprising then the blank "DVD+R" and "DVD-R" of another brand I purchased today "magmedia" therefore not "TDK" still appear as "empty" in the final burn process. Whats going on??

It appears to be my computer at fault and nothing to do with VideoStudio 10.........

Is this the only DVD drive on your system?

I'm about to suggest having a look at your BIOS setting.

Only if you feel comfortable doing so.

Check your BIOS setting. You probably don't need to change anything but it's worth having a look at how your BIOS sees your cd/DVD drive.

OK as most of the questions I ask are basic, I am probably not comfortable checking "BIOS settings" and don't really know what they are. My brother in law probably will, thoughs its a bit late to call him tonight, but I will if its difficult.

Just answer me one thing (if possible), are we now talking about a setting change or faulty DVD drive component?

Another thing I noticed is that via "My Computer" right click on "CD Drive" then "Properties", then "Hardware" my DVD drive is there but not highlighted. When I nominate it and OK it does not stick there and reverts to the original setting. Is this anything to do with BIOS settings or am I talking waffle...........

Have a look here and see if cd recording is enabled on your drive (this includes dvds, but windows only writes to cd).
There is a link to how to change the settings of your dvd writer, but I suggest you leave this to your brother in law if he's more pc literate.

If you mean that after clicking on "OK" it returns to the "My Computer" window - that's quite normal, and doesn't indicate a problem.

Is your pc in it's original condition, or was the DVD burner added - perhaps replacing a CD burner?

You can check that the DVD drive is correctly set by going back to "My Computer", right clicking on the drive and clicking on "Properties" and then the "Hardware" tab, and then clicking on the drive in the list of devices, exactly as you did before.

In the "Device Properties" shown below the device list, you will confusingly see it referred to as "Manufacturer: (Standard CD-ROM drives) This is normal, even with a DVD drive!

Below this, you should see "Location: Location 0 (0)"

This would indicate that the DVD drive was correctly connected as the "Master".

Below, you should also see "Device Status: This device is working properly".

If the DVD drive is in fact wrongly configured as a "Slave" you would see it shown as "Location: Location 1 (1)"

It should still be able to play DVD movies, however.

If your DVD drive is correctly shown as being at Location 0 (0), I would suggest you try the following:

1) In "Device Manager", find your DVD drive in "DVD/CD-ROM drives" and right click on it, then select "Uninstall".

2) Power down the pc and reboot. When Windows starts up, it should automatically detect your DVD drive, and you will see a "Found New Hardware" pop-up from the system tray in the lower right corner of your screen, and then the model number of your DVD drive as it is recognised.

If the above does not get the drive to work properly, I might suspect a bad IDE ribbon cable, or a BIOS mis-configuration.

Mystery solved!!!

I got my DVD burner checked out today,
- CD drive? OK,
- DVD drive? No Good (60 bucks).

Can I say a sincere THANKS to all of you who have responded and tried to help?

For what its worth Video Studio 10 is an amazing program and the simple slideshow that I have put together as 'Project 1' has a real 'WOW' factor, which for a bloke who has not done allot in this media is fantastic.

The support shown through this forum is very much appreciated. The links to tutorials allowed me to actually use the program (so far) very well. I feel I am starting to drive the program (ala car) in second gear now. Thank you for your help, for what is possibly a bit of a thankless scenario.

I am SURE I will ask more questions in the future,

Cheers & Thanks agian.......

Yikes! 60 bucks! You can get a nice burner from NewEgg for about $35.

I hope you haven't chucked away the Optorite though. You might still be able to restore it by reloading 150E firmware - sometimes burners seem to benefit from a shock to the system.

Glad it's sorted anyway
