Can I overlap video clips?
When editing in VS8, am I able to overlap adjacent clips as a common transition effect? Thnx.
Thank you for your assistance. I'm very grateful!

Thx for such a prompt reply. I'm not sure I understand. When I insert a transition between the clips and then stretch it (to attempt an overlap), the transition effect simply gets longer/slower, but the two clips are still separate. What I'm wanting is to have one image temporarily superimposed on the other image as the transition effect.
Thanks again!
Mike
Thanks again!

Hi
Do not get confused with Overlay and Transitions/Effects.
The Overlay track is used to set an Image or Video over the top of the main track. It can be used for the Picture in Picture effect. ( the overlay track is the second track down )
Transitions are an effect used when combining two adjacent clips in the main/top track.
(transitions cannot be used in the overlay track)
Click the Effects tab and the library should show the transitions, there are lots to choose from.
Ok
You can set the transition duration from File-Preferences-Edit, try a setting of 4 seconds. ( also set the Insert Image Color duration to 12 )
The transition can be set to occur automatically every time you insert a clip. (to the top main track only)
Now
File-Preferences-Tick Use Default Transition effect
Select the transition you wish to use.
When you say ¡¥the clips are still separate¡¦, I think you are viewing the project in Storyboard view. This shows the video and effects as separate clips.
Switch to Timeline view to see the project as a continuous film.
Use the Zoom tool, the + and ¡V signs can expand and contract the timeline view, allowing you to see more or less frames.
Now do a test using the Image library as your clips, insert them to the timeline, each will be 12 seconds with a 4 second transition.
Hope this Helps

Thx Trevor-
Yes, I'm familiar with the differences between using the "Overlay" tab and the "Effects" tab, but I still don't have the result I'm seeking. When I use the Effects transitions, e.g., Peel, Turn, Flip, etc., I get the first clip which transitions via Peel/Turn/Flip/whatever into the second clip - but NOT SUPERIMPOSED on the first clip. I'm trying to simply superimpose (overlay) the first few seconds of the second clip ON TOP OF the first clip w/o any transition effect, i.e., the two clips simply BLEND TOGETHER. Do one of the Effect transitions allow that?
Thank you.
Mike

Hi
Try the Cross Fade transition in the FX library section
This will fade from one clip to the other. (but I do not think this is the effect you are after)
If you want to apply a transparency, ie one clip is partially transparent set over another then I do not think VS 8 supports this option.
I do not have VS 8 installed, otherwise I would give it a go.
Place your clip in the overlay track, click to select the clip, if Chrome effects are used they will show in the Attributes tab/ panel ( if you do not see then its not supported )
Using later versions of VS you can make one video clip transparent (0% to 99 %)
The Mask and Chrome Key options can produce this effect.

Trevor-
YES!
The transition that does exactly what I was hoping is F/X-Crossfade. Give it try in your version if unfamiliar with it. You actually see this transition all the time on TV news clips, and I was sure that Video Studio allowed it. The result is a soft transition from one clip to another. I like it!
Again, THANKS A MILLION FOR YOUR HELP! Have a great week.
Best regards,
Mike

I have crossfade set as my default transition, all the others look too flashy by far to me!
However, for some strange reason this FX was not included in all versions of VS. It was in v4, but not in v7 (it's back in v11, thank goodness!) I copied the relevant file (fade.vfx) from v4 to the same folder in v7 and it worked perfectly.

Hi Paul
The X-fade transition is probably the most used of all the transitions.
It has been included in all the versions of VS that I own. (5-7-8-9-10) always under the FX page.
Make sure you have the latest DirectX installed
You have installed Intel Indeo driver from VS installation-Utilities option
There are some free transitions thanks to Stefan Burger

Hope this Helps
