PhotoImpact 5 on vista...screen capturing >_<

Post by Cataluna »

Ok, pretty much the subject says it all...

I have the FULL version of PhotoImpact 5 (sorry but I love this version, and I know it...I tried some later TRIAL versions and a friend's full version of 10 on her computer, I wasn't impressed). Works perfectly--no problems whatsoever on XP...

Anyways, I recently got a Dell laptop that came with windows vista, so I put my photoimpact 5 on it, it works perfectly BUT, when I go to Screen Capture, it seems to get stuck. I can hot key, select an area or full screen etc. to capture, but after that...well it wont capture. It keeps the select area box moving wherever I drag my mouse and it wont do anything else, I have to shut down my computer to use my mouse again or other programs.

Is there a patch for this on Vista? Or how do I fix it? (I even tried reinstalling!) I really DONT want to upgrade this version of PhotoImpact, I know it and I love it...

I do my screen captures the easy way - works with Vista and XP.

To capture the entire screen, on your keyboard press the [PrtSC] key.
To capture the active window on your keyboard press [Alt] + [PrtSC] keys at the same time.

Now open up any image editing program
PhotoImpact
PaintShop Pro
Adobe Photoshop
Microsoft paint

And simply paste the captured image to the image editor.

Hmm . . . you just gave me a thought . . .

I have been trying to take on PhotoImpact 12 myself for some basic Print Ad Layouts of which I have been struggling with trying to do basic fundamental functions.

I just looked up older versions of PhotoImpact on Ebay whereby there are sellers for v5, v7, v8, v10, v11.

My needs are very basic and simple . . . I think I'm going to go as far back as you and try v5.

These newer versions can have a steep learning curve for those of us that are truly new to the programs.

Some might say that's silly, but for me, I don't mind spending hours and hours of my time creating and designing, but waisting time trying to figure out what should be simple tasks, like using an 8pt arial font within an ad that I can't get to print clear . . . it's a killer.

These robust programs are awesome if you know them, but if you don't they can have a lot (way too many) pitfalls, ways to get lost.

Thanks for the idea . . I may get v5, v7 and v8 off of Ebay, at least that way I'm sure to like one of them :)

For capturing screenshots, I use Techsmith's SnagIt -which I then edit in PhotoImpact.

Consider yourself lucky that such an old version works on Vista and get your screen captures by other means. :)

PI 5 is not and never will be supported by Vista. It is not supported at all anymore, as a matter of fact.
