Please help - using Editor in HD format
I just purchased VideoStudio 11 Plus specifically for use with my new Canon HG10 AVCHD camcorder and the fact that VideoStudio is one of the few that claimed to have full support for AVCHD.
I've installed all updates and the HD Power Pack but when I load the VideoStudio Editor it shows the project as "DVD NTSC 720*480". It appears that the only way to get it to HD format is to change to MPEG-2 however then I lose the surround sound audio.
Why is there not a project option to change the editor to AVCHD or another HD native format? Am I missing something?
Other side problem, when I click on help I get the message "Cannot find the help file".
It took me weeks to decide on this software, I hope I haven't wasted my money.

Good question, I'm not sure it matters very much that the project settings have to be set to HD values. The settings your looking for are in the appropriate burning module AVCHD/Blu-Ray/DVD/HD-DVD.
Try standard dvd settings with dolby 5.1 audio.
If your that concerned about keeping the 5.1 original audio then split the audio off from the main video and export it as a WAV 5.1 PCM audio file.

Thanks for the hints, I did some playing around and did notice that it didn't seem to matter what the project settings are, more important when you do the video export. It's a little misleading, I wonder why they bother using project settings at all.etech6355 wrote:Good question, I'm not sure it matters very much that the project settings have to be set to HD values. Project Settings in almost every video editor is a key setting, usually very important.I wonder why they bother using project settings at all.
It's just that the avc/h264 video is new, not an editable format, and technically you should be using proxy files if your editing the video(s).
In VideoStudio when you go into the "Share -> Create Disc" Burnning Module you also have "Project Settings". If you click on the GEAR Icon you can customize them. Those are the settings that VS will use to encode or re-encode video that's burnt on the project dvd.
So the editor has project_settings & the burning_module has project_settings.
For avc/h264 (avchd disk), the project settings in the burning module are important.
If you go into the AVCHD Burning Module you will see you can set your Project_Settings for avc/h264 very customized.
My average settings are CBR 15MBS for Video & Dolby 5.1@448kbs for audio, 100% quality/compression.

I'm a bit worried that when working on a project if I go to:
file, project properties, edit, compression ... the highest resolution I can get is PAL DVD. No sign of the bluray level of resolution I thought I would be able to work with from start to finish of my project.
Will all my carefully inserted videos & images be downgraded to 720*576 resolution? The title bar persistently says Im working on DVD PAL 720*576 even though I've inserted higher res video & still images.

The hot fix is NOT the same as the hot pack (silly terms anyway, in my opinion). The hot fix was ONLY to fix one single installation problem and you don't use it unless you had that problem. The 'hot pack' is dated 8 November 2007 and adds a lot of the functionality you appear to be missing.
Click on the ? in the top right of the VS screen, then click on 'About Ulead Video Studio'. On the new screen which appears, your version should be 11.5.0157.2 if you have correctly applied the 6 Nov patch and the 8 November hot pack. If you don't have version 11.5 showing, then you certainly don't have the hot pack...

In the Project Settings, click on the Compression tab, and change it to MPEG-2. Then go back to the General tab, and click on the pull-down menu for Frame size. It should have options going all the way up to and including 1920 x 1080.
For some unknown reason the default compression setting for VS is NTSC or PAL DVD, which are for Standard Def not High Def. You're working with MPEG-2 HD or AVCHD, which the specs are different..

AHA, at last. That's worked, but in the course of doing what you suggested I've found that if you set sound to 5.1 the resolution settings go back to 720*576.
Is there any way to work both in high def video and surround sound. The camera clip I'm working with has both.
