Hello
I just bought a Canon HG10 and it works great with the software that it comes with (Corel Guide Menu, Movie Factory SE) I would like more features so I downloaded the trial version for both Movie Factory and Video Studio. Both do not work woth the Canon HG10. It appears it doesn't recognize my device nor the M2TS file format.
Is this true? What are my options?
Thanks all.

Software provided with hardware is often specially tweaked to work with that hardware. Your best bet would be to use that supplied hardware for transferring the video from the camcorder to your hard drive.
Once you have the video on your hard drive then you can import it into a more up to date program such as MovieFactory 6+ or VideoStudio 11.5+

Catch 22. What Steve suggested works but not with the trial versions. Is this true? What are my options?
If you want to edit your videos (using a very fast processor) then VS11+ retail with the patches will work for you.
MF6+ retail with the patches will also work but you may want to install an add-on pack for $20.00 for more high definition features & burning like avchd or BDMV disks.
If you decide on neither VS or MF then after the trials remove them and re-install MF5.6 over itself again.
Yes, many persons are doing this.
They are also copying the m2ts files directly from the cam to their local harddisk and then inserting them into either VS11+ or MF6+.
I did read where some of the cams have a 2gig limitation on their harddisks, so if you recorded for a very long time the 1 video is split across 2 files then. I'm assuming that in this situation the software used to extract the videos would work better.
As fas as I can tell both VS & MF use the same procedure as MF5.6se which is called the DVD/-VR avchd import disk feature. The MF6se does have more features like writing back to the cams harddisk etc.
Thought I should point out that 2 gig limitation because it may cause a problem if copying directly from the cam if it's one video split between 2 files.
If you search the web you should also come across it.
