Help ERROR - unable to switch to capture mode

Post by RBuj »

Notice: I really want to have a decent laptop for editing video while on the road. If you think the problem is with the laptop limitations and have a recommendation for a more powerful computer that would be better for this purpose, please let me know. I can return this but have a target budget of up to $1200. The Sony cost me $900 but I am willing to go higher as a result of this weeks pain and suffering. Because I would return this, it would be best for me to choose from options available at Circuitcity.

Brand new Laptop: Sony VAIO VGNNR260ES
Operating System: Vista Home Premium
Motherboard:
Graphic Card: Video card: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
Processor: The 1.6GHz Intel Pentium Dual Core T2330
Hard Disk Drive: 200GB
Memory: 2GB... Video Memory 358MB
Camera: Canon HV20 HD
Connect to Computer: Firewire cable

Describe your problem:
I just purchased this laptop and installed the software and updates (ver 11.5.0157.2Plus). When I try to capture I see this error message<unable to switch to capture mode. Check if your video capture driver is
working properly>. When I press Capture, the computer screen accurately reflects the camcorder tape counter position, the camcorder then displays the video (paused), and the error pops up. I tried a number of configuration options and none worked. I also tried windows movie maker came installed on laptop and it works fine. I spent hours looking for help information and decided to come here where I have a forum of people that I believe can help. I contacted Sony VAIO tech service and they say sorry, we don't support 3rd party items.

Properties of your source files (format, file size, where did you get it?):

What devices are involved and their mode of connection?: Firewire

Lower Field First

Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo
PAL or NTSC:NTSC

Error Codes (if any): unable to switch to capture mode. Check if your video capture driver is working properly
Product Version: ver 11.5.0157.2Plus

Thank you.

Replaced Sony VAIO

Post by RBuj »

FYI - I returned the VAIO and replaced it with an HP. Problem should be solved. I won't be able to load and try it until sometime this weekend.
