UPD files

Post by AlexM »

Whenever I complete a project, I get the project, and also a small file next to it in "MyVideos" with the same name. It is a UPD file. Can I delete these files? Seems like a lot of clutter.

Thanks

I noticed no replies to your post so thought I would enter my opnion.

I have deleted those (.upd) files without noticing any problems.

I am not sure but think that these files are used internally by VS maybe to enable faster loading. If I am correct then deleting them would only slow down later loading.

The UPD files are a database file, that merely stores scene information for the MPEG files generated. So in your project if you have used the Split by Scene, that information is stored in the UPD file.

Once you're done editing, it's safe to delete those files.

They are also used in combination with high quality playback and smart rendering to let VS reencode only the changed portion(s).

I am not sure but I believe that only works in the same session.
After exiting and re-entering VS I had full re-rendering on several occasions. But maybe it's also just a bug because smart rendering was unreliable at least until VS10.

Anyway after your final rendering they are useless and can be deleted, if you need to spare 4KB. I do because I find it clutters the directories.
This my understanding of it.
I have been proven wrong on several occasions in my life. It's not going to improve.
