VS11 - problems with DivX 6.8?

Post by chuteboxe »

When I open VS, it runs very slowly and is nearly impossible to use. Also, the divx icon on the right of the bottom toolbar flickers on and off as if divx is working and the next second it shuts off or something. I tried downloading an older version of divx like 6.5 and now VS runs fine. The only problem is that .avi files above 150 MB cannot be opened. I get a message saying: "[filename] is not accessibe." I then click 'OK' and I get another message saying: "These files cannot be added to this project. These files may be of unknown format, the computer does not have enough memory or the file is copyright protected." then it lists the file that cannot be opened.

So basically, divx 6.8 makes VS incredibly slow and older versions of divx allows VS to run nicely, but doesn't let me open certain files. Does anyone have any idea as to how I can solve this problem? Forgive me if the solution is obvious. I'm not too good with computers :?

Then scroll to the top of the page you are viewing now and click the "Profile" button. Fill in as much of your computer specs as possible.

I can't help you with this particular problem, but I can tell you that all of these highly compressed formats tend cause lots of trouble when you try to edit or convert them. This includes DivX, Xvid, WMV, MOV, MPEG-4, etc. Even MPEG-2 (the DVD format) can sometimes be "difficult" to edit. Some people are able to edit their DivX files.... It seems to be "hit-or-miss". It may depend on what encoder was used or on the settings used... I don't know.

You should probably look for a special-purpose DivX editing program if you plan on editing DivX.

You should not have any trouble converting editing an AVI/DV file (DV is less-compresed at 13Gb per hour) and converting it to one of these formats as the last step. This is how these formats are designed to be used. ...But, I'm not excusing Video Studio's flaky handling of these formats.

I would suggest that if you're going to work with DivX files, you use their special purpose programs such as DivX Author. It probably can handle their formats much better than VS.

Thanks everyone, I'll probably use a different program for these files.
