VideoStudio 11 Renering

Post by jpmorgan49 »

I tried to find this in the documentation but I either missed it or it wasn't there. Does Rendering use GPU or CPU? I'm just trying to find out if the CPU does the work or the Graphics Card. Thanks.

CPU. The GPU will have virtually no effect on rendering speed. Video editing, especially of standard definition video, needs very little in the way of video resources. There is no need for a discrete 3D graphics card - even the humblest integrated graphics will be fine.

The only situation I can think of where a separate graphics card can be of assistance is the case where you have a relatively slow cpu and wish to play back high definition H.264 encoded video on your pc. In that case many cards feature hardware acceleration, which when enabled with a suitable software video player (NOT Video Studio) will allow smooth HD video playback. Without such assistance from the GPU, it's generally reckoned that you need an E6600 or equivalent or better for unassisted playback of HD H.264 video.

Another thing which has virtually no effect on rendering speed is the amount of installed RAM. Whilst it might have many other benefits, and is currently cheap, it has a negligible effect on encoding speed.
