New User/VS 11/Preview Problems

Post by amandaringer »

I purchased and downloaded VS 11 last night. I tried to add video files in avi format (TV Shows), and in the preview pane, once played, the video has waves and lines, making the video distorted. But once I stop the video, the frame(s) are clear. I have installed codec packs too. I know the avi files are fine because I can play them in any player on my computer. Can't edit a video if I can't see it in the preview :(

Please help me figure this out. I have searched all over for a answer.

Thanks in advance,
Amanda

I have installed codec packs too.
Usually that's not a good thing to do. Many times VS has a problem with these "Fix em all" and "All in One Codec Packs".
Have you installed all the correct updates to VS11+
Patch#1 and the HD-Pack?
Directx 9.0C dated November 2007?
Don't install the top one which is the HotFix, you don't need it.

Why do you want to preview the video?

I only installed codec packs because that's what I thought I needed to do when I was looking up information to my problem.
Im going to try install the things you suggested.
It's hard to edit a video if I can't see the video playing in the edit/preview box. lol :)

EDIT:
I had already installed what you have suggested.
The HD pack is only for the plus version right?
Still no luck :(
Lines/waves up and down my videos. I don't know what else to do.

Waves and lines to me suggests a NTSC and PAL incompatability issue.

Check that your recording and Project settings are the same

I have literally tried every project property for my avi movie. Now in most cases I get green bars going across the movie.
I'm getting extremely disapointed :(

I appreciate all the help though. I hope I can get this working!

Can you right click on one of your avi movies *within* Video Studio (either in the timeline or the library window) and copy ALL its properties here please. That way, at least we will know what kind of avi we are talking about. There is, of course, a wide variety of video formats which use the .avi extension, but are very widely different in the way they behave when trying to edit them.

I've never had this problem with Windows Movie Maker (Vista version). So that's why I'm even more confused to why I'd have a problem with a paid editor. lol. Although as soon as I installed Videostudio, the Movie maker will crash everytime I open it.

To correct the Crashing Movie Maker problem read the following thread..
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=29186

What are you using to capture the video, ie; how are you getting the video onto your PC?

With that sort of CODEC (compressor), the MPEG-4, it seems that you are capturing from a digital still camera. I know that's probably not the case, since you are capturing TV shows. However we need to know the make and model of the device you're using. There may be some settings within the device that can be changed..

Oh yes you do. Ulead was bought by Intervideo, which was bought by Corel.

These types of files are highly compressed and are meant to be viewed, not edited.
