Disappearance of vfw codecs in Vista: a VS11 Plus bug ??
Myself, and at least one other person, have witnessed installed vfw codecs failing to show up in the VS11 avi codec listing, as well as other editing applications (e.g. VirtualDub); The problem appears to be specific to Vista.

Has anyone else had this problem? I suspect a bug.
Cheers.

I'm not sure I understand your reply. What exactly is not supported in Vista?
I can only assume that you are referring to support for compression formats and associated vfw codecs that are not provided or normally used as standard by VS11 Plus. Correct?
Strangely enough, when I first installed VS11Plus on my vista laptop the vfw avi codecs already present appeared in both the avi project and output (create video) compression listings. I did not try and use these formats and so do not understand why they would be there one minute and gone the next.
If Ulead (Corel) have decided to drop 'support' for extenal vfw codecs in VS11 I would have thought that the paying public would have been notified of this in the product information and warned that the product would render these codecs inaccessible to other editing programs (e,g. VirtualDub) that dont seem to have a problem with Vista.
Are Ulead (Corel) even aware of this conflict, if indeed VS11 Plus is the cause?
Had I known I would be facing these problems I would surely not have upgraded to VS11 Plus.

After Vista was released, VS10+ was still the current version, and Ulead released a "Vista Patch" for VS10+. On the Updates web page for VS10+ they provided the Notes, which did include this information.
Go to the following link, scroll to the Vista Update and read the Notes posted in red..

I have never wanted to use external vfw codecs within Video Studio. Not providing support is one thing, but screwing up other programs is another.
Are they not at least able to provide a fix that allows other programs to utilize these codecs?
Are they even aware of the problems their software causes ?

VS11+ and Vista can make installed codecs disappear from the available lists. After some research by elimination of possible culprits, I figured when the probem happens in my configuration:
-Open VS11+ and hit capture. Plug in my Canon HV20, in HDV mode. That's it! All codecs installed after the original Vista installation are no longer on the list (using WMP HELP,About,Tech Support). This is not ramdom. Every time I did it , Codecs became history.
THe only fix I could find was to re-install Vista. Thanks to this board, I am now using the Acronis Backup program and I can recover my system in 25 minutes.
I no longer use VS11+ to capture from my HV20, only HDVSplit.

I never had a problem on my Vista laptop using other programs that utilize vfw codecs. I would be happy at this point just to see them back on the VirtualDub compression list. Tried every suggested registry fix, but still no luck. I guess a clean re-install of Vista is the inevitable conclusion, the other being only using VS11+ on my XP desktop. Pain in the butt.

Disappearing codecs
WorBry: I had a problem like this myself along with one other form member where all of our codecs disappeared and our first fix would to be reinstall Vista to fix it. After doing this I had all of my Video codecs back. The last time I used Studio 11.5+ the problem came back.

The XP reg location is also in Vista, This reg location in windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit is.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\DRIVERS32]
you will find a entry just called ( vidc.uldx ) with no quotes or equal sign and no values. I tryed deleting this valve and it immediately restored all the codecs to my following software, VS11.5+, Widows Medis Player, VirtualDub and now all codecs show up under Gspot.exe without rebooting.
When I get a chance I will try capturing something with VS11.5 to see if
it is the culprit causing the disappearing codecs.
Maybe we should move this fix to a permanent place???

I think you may have to look at one of the other programs you have installed.
On XP and Vista I do not have any references to a vidc.uldx in the registry/drivers32 sections (both areas).
I think it's a Directx thing and being installed by another application.
Be aware that when you run apps in windows, they can modify the registry.
So if another application is doing this, and it runs on bootup it will restore that setting that's causing problems.
When running VS11+ when it makes a call to the codecs on the system, it's also possible when the DLL loads (the codec), it will modify the registry and put that setting that's causing the problem back in.
Sounds more like a codec or program that's not compatible with Vista.
I don't have very much software installed on my Vista Home Premium, not even virus protection yet. I have MF6+ and VS11+ installed (with all the updates).
Searching the registry for vidc.uldx comes up with NILL.
I don't think ulead is putting that reference there. Someone mentioned maybe a Divx reference. Ulead does have references to Divx and it's not that one.

I just did a capture with VS11.5+ and everything went fine untill I closed VS11. after closing VS11 the vidc.uldx popped up in the registry and all my codec's were gone. After deleting vidc.uldx everything was back.
I have tried using VS11 in different combinitions,
and only when using video capture does the vidc.uldx pop up in the registry.

What is your camera ? I realized I ALWAYS lose my installed codecs as soon as I try to capture video with my Canon HV20.mitcs0ke wrote:I just did a capture with VS11.5+ and everything went fine untill I closed VS11. after closing VS11 the vidc.uldx popped up in the registry and all my codec's were gone. I have a Panasonic PV-GS35 and I just got a Panasonic PV-GS150sl2008 wrote:What is your camera ? which is a 3CCD and I lose the codecs in VS11 as soon as I do a capture
with both of them.
I tried both with Widows Movie Maker, Roxio, and Virtual Dub and I don't
lose my codecs when using those, both I don't want to use those programs because I hate them all and they are not as good as VS11.
I really don't think its a camera problem because VS11 never had a problem seeing the Panasonic camcorders and the capture always works well and the videos turn out really good.
I think its just a VS11/Vista bug thats been missed and since I can do a
Regedit on the fly and fix the problem I'm ok with it for now.
Even with this codec problem, I'm not giving up my VS11!!!!
