Work the camera from the Capture page..

Post by Spitzer222 »

My firewire is inoperative but I am able to connect and be recognized using the USB connection...However, I am unable to control the camera,(start, stop, rewind etc) from the capture page..I have to do everthing manually thru the camera buttons ...The Video says I ought to be able
to use the buttons that appear on the capture page but they dont
respond..Can someone tell me what I might be missing//
Thank you..

Which camera?

What version of VS?

Does your camera's manual suggest that VS can operate it?

Be aware that the video coming across the USB is not the same as video coming across the firewire, at least on every cam I have seen. The USB was intended for transferring still images for cams with that ability and low quality video made for the web or similar situations.

As far as controlling it I'd go to the manufacturers site to see if they have any drivers for that. As far as I know my cam can't be controlled via USB.

But no wonder new buyers get confused when their videocamera comes with a lovely USB 2.0 cable and instructions on where to plug it in. They've heard that USB 2.0 permits the same speed data transfer as Firewire. So they figure Oh, I guess I transfer video to my computer with this!

Is there a Firewire cable in the box, to go with the Firewire port on the videocamera? Not usually. Are there instructions in the owner's manual for transferring video data to their computer? Often not.

Makes you wonder.

Usually it's only a USB1 port which doesn't have the capacity to transfer the video at full quality anyway. Apparently the new capture cards/devices work well with USB2.

Hi,

In general, I don't think that USB is widely accepted by video cameras. While that may be changing, IEEE1394 (firewire) is ubiquitous and works very well.

More importantly, FireWire defines a standard for device control of DV hardware, and USB does not. That's why you can plug any DV camcorder into your PC with a FireWire cable and tell it to rewind, play etc.
