Precisely what were you playing in the camera? If you were playing a digital 8 tape filmed by the camera, then capture via firewire should have worked. If, however, you were playing back an analogue 8mm or Hi8 tape, then there is a bug in VS11+/11.5+ which will not allow capture from a Digital 8 camera such as yours.
If you apply the patch of 6 November 2007, you *can* use the camera as a passthrough device to capture from some other analogue device (video camera, VCR) which is connected to the Sony. But that is all, I am afraid.
It is the fault of a new capture module in VS11 which Corel decided to use -- partly, I think, because the capture module in previous versions used DirectShow, which apparently doesn't work properly under Vista...
However, you should be able to at least capture direct using WMM (as opposed to trying to play back the already captured video). Or you could download the small freeware program WinDV (windv.mourek.cz) which a lot of us here use for capturing DV.
If none of these work, then I would begin to suspect a hardware fault somewhere -- either in your camera's firewire port, the connecting firewire cable or the firewire card in your new computer...

thanks for your reply. i am playing back digital 8 video that i recorded on the sony camcorder. Everything worked good with vs11 in my old pc using windows XP. unfortunately the pc died. I'll try wind.dv. video gets saved to my HDD but I get the "80040265" error when I try to open the file. i con't see an avi codec in Vista. I downloaded DivX and now I can play the video on VS11, WMM, DivX, and Quick time.

DivX is most definitely NOT the way to go if your intention is to create a DVD. Yes, it is high quality, but it is highly compressed -- much more compressed, and using different algorithms to put it together. You will then have to decompress it to DVD compatible mpeg-2 and do other editing of properties which may or may not work.
In other words, it is MUCH better to capture in DV format, edit in DV format and then, and only then, convert it to DVD compatible mpeg-2.
