Encoding TS files to Blu-Ray/HD DVD (mpeg-4)

Post by AB2008 »

Recently I bought Ulead VideoStudio 11 Plus (11.5.0157.2 Plus). I install Main Program, Patch, and Power Pack. I am using this program to convert High Definition transport videos (ts) to HD DVD (mini) and Blu-Ray.

The input files that I am using are transport files (ts) encoded with video mpeg-4 (avc) files @ 1440x1088i level 4.0 and ac3 audio files (2, 5.1).

I am having the following problems:

1-Some of this videos crash VideoStudio when the process is trying to encode the video file, sometimes at the midle of the encoding. Is there any aplication that can fix or verify the TS file before adding it to VideoStudio ? Why VideoStudio crash? This same files work correctly with Nero 8 and ConvertXtoDVD.

2-It is possible to encode HD DVD and Blu-Ray using mpeg-4 (avc ) instead of mpeg-2? If not, is there any plugin that I can buy to endode video using mpeg-4?

It is called H.264 - Please view

Ok, I agree, it is called H.264 ...

How I can encode Blu-Ray/H.264 videos using VideoStudio?

Sorry sjj1805 I already tried that !!!

When using "CREATED VIDEO FILE" option, the created file is not Blu-Ray standard. That means that when I try to reload it in a Blu-Ray or Hd DVD option to author it (create a disc), VideoStudio tries to re encode it using MPEG-2 compression.
Why h264 encoding is not an option when creating Blu-Ray or HD DVD, if it is part of the specifications and the encoder is in VideoStudio?

Have you tried to create an AVCHD disc?
PC World wrote:Sony also claims that you'll be able to watch footage recorded on an AVCHD camcorder to DVD on both Blu-ray Disc players and the forthcoming PlayStation 3. The discs won't be compatible with older DVD players, though--most won't have the processing power to decompress the MPEG-4 video. Both Panasonic and Sony are planning to license the technology, however; so we will probably see AVCHD-compatible DVD players from them and other manufacturers shortly.

One major advantage of the new format is that you won't need an expensive Blu-ray Disc or HD DVD burner to use it: Because you can store the video on the same standard DVDs you already use, you can use the same DVD burner. All you'll need is the new software to write the video out in the correct format and an AVCHD-compatible player.

Yes I had created AVCHD with no problems, but I would like to create Blu-Ray and HD DVD using h264... :(

Yes, you can put AVC/H264 video on all 3 formats.
AVCHD Disk (Of course)
Blu-Ray Disk
HD-DVD Disk - You must burn a Real HD-DVD Disc to use H264 (good luck with that one) otherwise if you burn a 3X DVD, HD-DVD on DVD you must use hd-mpeg2, the problem is the players won't play the dvd and report back "Wrong Format"
So for HD-DVD use your source mpeg2 video files.

AVC = Advanced Video Codec.(Uses H264 Compression) It was added to the Mpeg-4 family.. Some programs use this term and others don't. There is an AVC container format, usually only used in the authoring stage of Blu-Ray Disc Media.

To do what you want Start VS11+, go directly into the "Burning Module" from an empty timeline.
Under the "GEAR" Icon make sure "Do Not Convert Compliant xxxxx" and "X-Disc" are checked on. Also setup the proper settings under "Preferences"
Import your compliant media into this module (Top left Icon).
If you do this in any of these 3 modules and if your source is compliant the videos will then be passed through the encoder and multi-plexed into your target device.
Nero avc/h264 files are weird. You make them as UFF, yet when you import them they are LFF.

In my opinion I like the VS11+ or MF6+ better, if you want to see nice video setup your "Project Settings" in the avchd burning module to
Quality/Compression = 100%
15MBS CBR (Constant bit Rate)
Upper_Field_First 1440x1080 dolby xxxxx.
Burn to a DVD.
I've found the burning module makes a really nice conversion from HDV -> avc/h264 video. You can also reuse the avchd disks videos again in other projects without re-encoding them because they are compliant.

Try the HD-DVD thing yourself, use some compliant source avc/h264 videos in the HD-DVD module and burn to a Folder. Then play it back in Nero, Nero also will stutter, at least on my system....and the Toshiba players report wrong format for a full h264 3X DVD, OR if you mix mpeg2 (as the first video) & h264 (as the 2nd or 3rd) on the same 3X DVD when it gets to the H264 video it will stutter, can't win.

Well, I tried to create a AVCHD disc but after 10 hours of encoding the AVCHD, when converting the audio there was an "UNSPECIFIED ERROR 5:0:0" and the process stop!!! What may cause this?
Also, is there any way to createa AVCHD in a folder in my computer instead of burning it in a disc?

You need to explain where your source videos came from and their properties.
The process used before inserting them into VS11+.
They may not be compatible or compliant with uleads avc/h264 decoder/encoder

The only process used before loading them to VideoStudio is that they are trim with h264_cutter (however the original file also crash)...

Not enough information. Did they originate from a HDV cams as mpeg2 video? An AVCHD cam? High Definition analog capture card? Downloaded from the internet?
What is the bit-rate of the video and fielding information? Are they NTSC, PAL, 24P (progressive)?
You cannot cut H264 video without completely re-encoding it, otherwise the file is corrupt. It may play and be compatible for playback only, but not editable or compatible for conversions.

(Sorry for the delay I was having trouble login to my account)
I already find the problem (some corrupted files )!!!

This is not correct!

When authoring files to HD DVD you cannot use AVCHD files. If you do that your resulting disc doesn't play correctly because they are not HD DVD compatible. However using AVC files (HD DVD compatibles) created in Nero 8, can be author with Video Studio 11 with out rencoding and without using the "X disc" option. I just try it in DVD5/9 media and it works correctly in my Toshiba A2 player. AVC files for HD DVD should be level 4.1 and not 4.0, that is for AVCHD.
So, sadly I must conclude that at this moment I cannot encode HD DVD with AVC fles when using Video Studio 11.

Maybe in a future update this may be included...

I've just been experimenting further. Yes, VS11.5 does not allow the generation of HDDVDs on standard DVDs if given the AVCHD output of my camera, but it will happily produce an AVCHD output file.

So... I took that file, and put it into Nerovision 4. That accepts it quite happily. I told it to burn a high def DVD and it did so, quite quickly, no transcoding. On the disk was unfortunately, a BluRay structure with m2ts files, which of course won't play on an HDDVD player.

So... Take the m2ts file that Nerovision 4 has made and use that as the input to the burn tab of VS11.5. Select HDDVD output, burn the disk. Again very quick, no transcoding to nasty old mpeg2 going on. Check the disk, it's an HVDVD folder with some EVOs in it. Stuff it into the HDDVD player, and it plays!.

One problem though, the definition is there, but somewhere along this messy process, frames are being dropped so the output has skips...

SO, the moral is that, if that workflow can produce a valid AVC-Mpeg disk that an HDDVD player can handle, with no transcoding going on anywhere along the chain, so could VS11.5 if its current shortcoming was fixed.

Come on Ulead/Corel sort this BUG out...
