Can't Import some AVI/WMV files since installing MSP7 SP3

On a Core2Duo 6400, 2GB RAM, 10GB Free HD, NVidia 7900GT I can no longer import some movie files since I installed SP3. When i hit import the mouse cursor changes but nothing else happens. I have uninstalled and reinstalled without service pack to prove this. On another machine (its a faster laptop with the same ram and v fast quadro graphics card) i get similar behaviour except it freezes and requires me to end task.

The only difference i have noticed on the files that dont work is that they dont have an audio track. Adding audio using wmenc.exe (Windows Media Encoder 9) allows the files to be imported however i have hundreds of files and dont want to do this by hand and most batch convertors lose quality.

Any suggestions?
