How did you capture/transfer the video to your PC? Using a Firewire (Sony calls it i-Link), or USB?

The DV-DVD wizard I don't use, however should recognize a DV input (firewire) if is recognized by your computer. This can only be used with DV captured/transferred via firewire.

Depending on your system, and complexity of your video, it can take some time to render a video file. VS needs to convert your DV video file to MPEG-2. If you have a bunch of stuff running on your PC, such as trying to surf the internet, working on other graphical programs that may also be CPU hungry, will cut down on the resources VS needs to do this. Ideally when you allow most all of your PC resources to be devoted to this, it can take anywhere from 1½ times the duration of your video, or longer. So if you have a video that is 2 hrs long, it can take 5 hours to render your MPEG-2 video file.

First, since your camera is a mini DV, then the ONLY way of getting high quality video from it is to capture in DV format AND using firewire. The USB connection, as far as I am aware, is a USB 1.0 connection and only used for transferring still photos taken with the camera or, at most, low quality streaming video.

DV, by the way, is captured in real time i.e. a one hour DV tape will take one hour to capture. There is no way of hurrying it up.

However, you appear to be not only using the low quality USB connection, but also are capturing to mpeg-2 format. Coming from a camera that shoots in DV format, this means that you are not only using the wrong connection but also then expecting your computer to be able to convert from one incoming format (DV) to a completely other format (mpeg-2) on the fly. This is a demanding and complex process in its own right, and many computers simply can't manage it (let alone when they are not connected via Firewire into the bargain...)

So check whether your computer has a Firewire connection and use that. If it does not, then Firewire cards are cheap and easy to install if you have a spare PCI slot on your motherboard... Make sure you get the correct cable which is usually a bigger 6 pin plug for the computer end and smaller 4 pin plug for the camera end.

That camcorder has a USB streaming feature in it to capture DV, but dv wizard cannot work because USB 2.0 streaming has to capture DV. DV -> Mpeg2 on the fly doesn't work with any of the ulead products, or any other video products I've tried to perform USB/DV -> Mpeg2 on the fly..
I would use the firewire interface, it's so much easier.

But I'm curious as he has an E at the end of his model number, which is a PAL camcorder.
Yet, he's posting NTSC parameters.

Are you sure about the USB capture to DV? The specifications I have for that camera only say it can be used as a webcam and for streaming video in the low quality web sense. There is no indication that it is a USB 2.0 connection which would be fast enough for DV capture... Moreover the mpeg that is captured via the USB connection is captured from the Memory Stick, not the tape, and the mpeg has a maxium frame size of 320 x 240... so, as I say, low quality streaming video...

Ken,
I thought I read where it could and can't get the manual (errors).
But to usb stream as a webcam you put the cam in "Camera" mode and turn on the webcam feature under setup.
To transfer usb is the VTR/VCR/Playback model.
Pictures or video on the SD card are copied as an assigned drive letter.
That's the method all my cams that could capture DV via USB connection.

I could never get the USB (DV) connection to Mpeg2 on the fly. As far as capturing DV via USB no problems at all. Actually impressed with it, not that bad.

So I don't know 100% that cam is USB 2.0, remember reading before and can't find it now.

It's just that that camera is a middle of the road one in terms of price, and it came out in 2005 or even earlier. Only the very top of the line ones at that time had USB 2.0 connections. And none of the reviews I read of it (4) mentioned it being USB 2.0 and only referred to streaming video at low resolution...

Yes, I think your correct. Ron told him to use the firewire connection, the best method. He hasn't answered back.
I only wanted to point out that if the cam could or did have usb 2.0 for dv that it doesn't work for on the fly conversions. Should have worded that better.
I know the feature was handy to have for my laptop, which didn't have a FW port.

Well, from your other post, I can only repeat, get a 4 pin to 4 pin firewire cable and your problems should be solved...
