Rendering VS10+ project into mpeg video using SHARE

Post by Nicholas Rumin »

Typically it takes two to three tries for the project to complete. Typically the computer freezes midway and I have to terminate the VS10 process. Disc defragmenting helps but not always. All other programs are closed, no connection to Internet and virus scanning software is off.

Try following the Suggested Workflow of creating an MPEG2 file (Share>Create Video File) after editing. When that is finished, clear your timeline, then choose Share>Create Disc. When the burn window opens choose Insert Media to insert your MPEG2 file, then burn.

Thanks Black Lab. That is EXACTLY the work flow that I have been following. The problem occurs during the SHARE > CREATE VIDEO FILE step. This is where the the screen freezes before the rendering into MPEG2 completes and I am forced to terminate the process. Typically it takes two or three tries before the rendering completes.

I am careful to disconnect from the internet, close all programs incuding anti-virus. Even disc defragmentation does not always help.

What's the properties of your source video files? Since it is during the process of rendering your project files to a new file, there's something about them the program is choking on.

It could be video files such as Divx, MPEG4s, WMVs, or the audio such as MP3. VS seems to handle WAV files much easier than MP3.

It could be that the video files being used are corrupt. Finding how much and where involves a process of elimination. In other words, cutting the project in half, trying it to see if you get the same problem, if not try the other half. If so, cut it down again, and so on.

It could also be a transition or effect, or filter being used.

Has it always been this way or is this something that has recently appeared?

If it recently appeared you need to ask yourself what has changed on your computer, new software or hardware - or removed any.
If it has always been this way then perhaps there is a conflict somewhere.
You could try creating a Video Editing Profile

Thanks vidoman and sjj1805. The source video files are either imports from my camcorder or imports from a dvd. All files are imported into the project in MPEG4 format.
Unfortunately this problem has been there from the word go and, as I wrote, eventually the rendering into a single MPEG file does complete, but it usually takes more than one try.
Re the Video Editing Profile tutorial: looks daunting but I will give it a try.
Have the corrections that were suggested in the ensuing discussion been incorporated in the version to which your link directs me?

MPEG4 is one of the most highly compressed formats along with DivX and Xvid. Great for sharing videos across the internet due to the small file size and high quality, but terrible for editing.

Try converting them to MPEG2 first with a conversion program such as

Then I would say you have a corrupt file somewhere.

Here's what I would do. Say your project has 20 clips and is named Project A. Delete clips 11-20 and re-save it as Project B. So now Project B has clips 1-10. Try to render that. If it works, great. If not, your bad clip is in 1-10. Keep using this process of elimination until you find the culprit. May not be a video clip either. My father had a similar problem one time and he did this method of elimination until he discovered a bad audio file.

Thanks for the suggestion Jeff. I can certainly try that but I am not optimistic about the outcome. As I wrote previously, after enough tries (typically 2-3) the project does render completely into a single MPEG2 file. The one that I am struggling with at present croaked the first time after completing 35% and the second time after 95%. It seems to me that there is something going on in the background that is messing things up. I always disconnect from the internet and disable Norton anti-virus but I guess that is not enough

Are you talking about one particular project, or do you have this problem with every project?

Maybe not all, but certainly more than one :)

Since your source clips are already MPEG2, you shouldn't have to go to Share>Create Video File. Try going straight to Share>Create Disc.

I have been following religeously the tutorial on creating a dvd which I downloaded from this web board where it states" Always create a video file of your project before attempting to burn a DVD". I think it was authored by jchunter_2.
