I am brand new to this software and video editing, simply want to make pristine copies of my home HDV's onto 23 minute DVD-R's for easy viewing on my TV with Toshiba HD DVD player.
Basically I've simply added a few subtitles here and there, a few chapter marks, and then gone directly to share-make an HD DVD, without a menu.
The result seems pretty good, but I am not sure I am getting the best quality video. Is there something I am possibly missing? Should the end result be exactly as good as my original HDV tape?
In my first effort, I used the movie wizard, chose a very simple menu, and found that the file size went down from 4.3 GB to 3.1, and very significant degradation of video, but still Hi def.
The second time around, I used the editor to add subtitles, then went to make an HD DVD without a menu, and the file size stayed the same, and the video quality was much better-close or perhaps the same as the original.
Does the mpeg optimizer come into play at any point in the process if I am simply burning my projects to HD DVD?
Capturing on-air digital TV seems to take up fewer gigs per time than HDV. Does this mean I can make longer 3X DVD's from on-air broadcasts? Is the size of the captured file basically the same as what the burned 3X DVD will be?
Thanks for your comments, it seems like a very supportive forum. I am quite pleased with the program-- got going quite quickly, instruction booklet is not the best, but seems to work flawlessly on my setup.

dhmark,
If your new to video editing I suggest viewing the tutorials on the bottom of the main web page.
The methods used to edit mpeg2 video for dvd and burning dvd's is the same using HD-DVD, the only difference is HDV uses bigger framesizes & high bit-rates (because it's higher quality).
Project settings, video & audio properties, temporary files etc.
Whether your editing and making dvds you use the same workflow with HDV.
Because your new to video I would first learn how to make a high quality dvd. Burn the dvd and view it making sure everything is correct, smooth motion etc.
Then when you goto make HD-DVD's it's the same thing. Except different settings such as framesizes and bit-rates..
