Not able to open dvr-ms files

Post by caitalian »

I am doing the trial version of dvd movie factory. Just wanted to make sure it was worth the money. One of the biggest things I got it for was its ability to convert the DVR-MS files. When I go to select one of them there is about a 5-10 sec lag before actualy selecting it and then when I click open i just get a unable to open file and just closes. Works fine with my home videos of the camcorder. I am currently running it on vista.

If you're stuck with DVR-MS files, you may need to look for a different program, or you may need to use a 3rd-party program to convert your files to DVD-compatible MPEG-2 before importing them into Movie Factory.

Others have had trouble with DVR-MS, so if you search the forum for "DVR-MS", you may find some suggestions or solutions.

With so many different formats, and so many variations of each format, you just never know... (The more compressed formats tend to cause the most trouble.)

SUPER (FREE!!!) should be abe to convert your files to MPEG-2. (You can get the correct settings... framerate, resolution, bitrate, etc., from the Movie Factory project settings.)

SVCD 2 DVD MPG (FREE!!!) is another program that can convert almost any format to DVD-compatible MPEG-2.

SVCD 2 MPG (~ $40 USD) will make a DVD from almost any file-format.

If you need to edit the files, note that MPEG-2 can sometimes be "difficult" to edit. If you have trouble editing the converted MPEG-2 with Movie Factory, you may be able to use Microsoft Movie Maker to edit the MPEG-2, or the DVR-MS file before conversion. (I assume your computer came with Movie Maker.) Or, you can use a special-purpose MPEG editor from Womble ($35 - $100) or VideoReDo ($50 - $75).
