Downloading Video Files from Device

The title sounds simple, but it's much more than that...

I'm trying to download video from my AIPTEK A-HD 720P Digital Camcorder. I've installed all the software. When I hook up the device when I'm in VS 11 Plus, I get a message that reads, "either no video capture driver is installed in this system, or no device is connectd." The camera is on, plugged into the USB port.

I downloaded the videos in Windows, but it saved them as a .MOV file. How do I convert these to MPEGS, or a format that VS will read, if I can't directly load them from the camera?

Grrrr......

UPDATE: I figured out how to convert it to an .AVI file that VS will read. Now I just have to get rid of the letterbox effect.

But still, shouldn't I be able to directly download straight from the camera to VS?
