Is there a way to fade in/out a clip on an overlay track?

Yes there is. You should see some staggered bars on the Attribute tab below the Direction/Style. The bars that do not have the arrows are the Fade-in/Fade-out buttons. The bars with the arrows, cause the clip to rotate or spin as it appears.
If you have the User Guide, various UI features can be found in it. You can also hover your mouse cursor over the buttons/icons, a tool-tip will appear telling you what it is or does...
