VS11 and VS10

Post by mxyzptlk »

Can VS11 open and read VS10+ projects? In other words, is VS11 backwards compatible with previous versions?

With the favorable reply, I downloaded the TBYB version of VS11. Everything installed fine, the VS10 project loaded, but when I went to Create Disc, nothing happened. It appears that VS11 can't find the files that were part of the project. I placed all the files in the original location for the project -- didn't work. I placed the files in the VS11 folder under My Documents -- didn't work. I placed the files in the VS11 video library -- didn't work. Where do the files have to be? On a separate topic, the TBYB version of VS11 really does not do the product justice -- there are too many limitations.

Theoretically the newer versions can open the project files created in older versions. Practically we have discovered that it is best to complete a project using the software and version used to create that particular project.

For a more detailed look at what you get in the full version please view:

It should work really fine. When I installed V11 I was working on some projects with lots of bits and pieces and it worked perfect.

You write that V11 cannot create a disc. What happens actually when you want to accomplish this? Are there any messages?

Does this mean that the importing of the VS10 file goes ok?. Does the time line contain al the clips, audio etc. If VS cannot find the files, while opening the project file, it wil mention this on opening it. VS will ask you then where these files are and you will be able to relocate the files in that case.

Can you preview the project?

If so and all the files are on the time line it seems there's another problem. Can you create a video file and/or a disc from a short project made in VS11 from scratch?

No, I had a finished VS10+ project that I wanted to edit a bit (changing the choice of frames and background). I opened the project in VS11. When I went to Create Disc nothing happened. In VS10+ Create Disc would import the files and move on to the next step. It appears that VS11 either did not realize that the project required the imported files or couldn't find the files. And as I pointed out, I placed the files in various places to let VS11 find them, but none worked. Of course, at this point I can manually reinsert all the files and go through the process of building my project again, but it's a pain in the rear to do so after everything was pretty close to what I wanted in VS10+ (except for the little changes that I've pointed out). That's what I ended up doing in VS11 and the resulting video for DVD burning was fine. So VS11 works, but I might have to recreate my old VS10 projects.

After reading sjj1805's excellent link on what the full-blown VS11+ has to offer, I'm inclined to wait for VS12. Can someone tell me when VS11 was released? Usually, Ulead releases a new version once a year sometime.

I realize that you got your project burned to DVD, however on the re-linking issue, when VS does not find the files itself, you need to manually re-link. This is done by clicking the Re-link button on the prompt, then browsing your system for the file it is asking for. If you have all the files needed for the project in the same folder, re-linking the one file may be all that's needed. If not it may prompt you again, just repeat the process.

VS11 was released in April or May..

Just for information, VS 11 definitely can't open project files created in VS 7, says 'file cannot be read'. I guess it is asking a bit much...

Ah, I see that the project file also needs to know where are the transitions, music, backgrounds, etc. So even if the video files were found, it could be that VS11 could not find those other project "ingredients". But why not? I did not move any files in my VS10+ folders that had all my project components. Could it be that VS11 is looking for files in its own folders, and those files are missing because I'm using the TBYB version? At no time did VS11 ever prompt me for the location of any files. Man, it should not be this hard to test if VS11 can open a VS10+ projects for editing. Has anyone installed VS11 or 11+, immediately opened a previously functional VS10+ project, and got a working project?

Yes, in fact I just created and saved a project using VS10+. I then opened the project in VS11+. It worked fine. I closed VS11+ without saving it, and reopened the project in VS10+ made some changes, saved and closed. I again opened the project in VS11+, and all the changes were reflected including the chapter cues I had placed in VS10+.
