MPEG file too large for DVD

Post by Retired Tech »

Using VS8-SE. I have a 3.1GB MPEG file created from a VHS tape using the capture routine.
If I go immediately to the "Share" routine to burn a DVD the size of the file is 6.2 GB and it won't fit on a 4.4GB DVD.
If I bring up Movie Factory and send this same MPEG file to a DVD the file is only 2.6GB in size and then fits on a standard DVD
If I bring up Roxio's DVD builder with the same MPEG file the file size is 3.2GB and fits on the DVD.

So, wanting to use VS8 instead of the other programs there must be something that needs to be changed in VS8 that makes this file so large compared to the others. Any ideas would be appreciated....

This is a bug that keeps on living in Ulead code, upgrade after upgrade. It also happens in the new MovieFactory v4. My solution is to output to hard disk VOB files or a DVD ISO image (it will usually get the size right doing this) then use Nero to burn to disk.

I'm not sure what limitations the SE version has, but VS8 is similar to any other NLE. If the file was capture in ULead, then it should have automatically set the PROJECT SETTINGS to the same as the file (resolution and bitrate). But for some reason, the DVD authoring doesn't get the message. You need to set the DVD project to the same as the video project.

When you click on CREATE DISC. there is an icon in the lower left that looks like a Gear. Click that and change the settings.

Thanks for your response. Yes, both options worked for me. Of course it had to convert back to a smaller file and that took 3 hours! Funny that same file worked ok in other programs! Oh well...
