I noticed that is one of the problems with these handycams is people tend to record very short videos, which could be part of the problem, not sure.
If you can, when recording say a birthday party or whatever pause the cam between shoot's. Not start & stop, I don't know if you can do this with your cam but I can with my dvd recorders.
So many small clips are hard to work with.
But put as many of these clips into the timeline to equal about 20minutes or so.
Then use the same procedures as explained earlier to export them to a new file.

Open VS11+ standard timeline.
1) Click on the folder above the timeline and select "Insert Video"
2) Navigate to your source videos and select them and load them into the timeline, you can do this one at a time or when selecting the videos
.....hold down the left <CTRL> key and using the mouse select more than one video, this will load all the videos at once. Answer OK to both boxes.
.....You can do this repeatedly to insert videos into the timeline.
.....You may have to rearrange them in correct order on the timeline. To do this on the timelin just drag them around and over each other.
.....When VS11+ Prompts to make project settings answer "Yes", if VS11+ doesn't prompt then set them manually.
3) Then goto "Share -> Create video file -> Same as Project Settings" -> Options (Turn ON smartrender, use smartrender)
4) After the file is created then repeat again with smartrender OFF
5) Goto "Share -> Create video file -> Same as Project Settings" -> Options (Turn OFF smartrender, No smartrender)
6) Start a new project
7) Goto "Share -> Create Disk -> DVD
8 ) Assign your template to the project settings click on "Gear -> Change Mpeg Settings -> select your template"
9) Load your 2 videos that were created in steps 3 & 5. Use the top left Icon to load the videos into the burning module timeline.
10) Proceed on and burn a dvd of the 2 videos and compare them. Remember one was smartrendered and the other was re-encoded.

If both the videos play correctly then it could be that fact your original project was using very short clips.
If that's the case then use one of the videos (with the merged clips) to use in a new project and edit the video with titles & effects.
Then follow the same as above with smartrender on a burn a dvd.

Sue,
You have to set the audio first before changing the video parameters.
If you cannot change the default settings it's because the audio is set to LPCM.
So change the audio to Dolby 2/0 @ 256kbs first.
Then make the changes to the video bit rate.

Make sure you don't use any of the bad videos by mistake in the previous post. you want to use the raw footage shot from the cam and the above process will JOIN them into one large file.

I'm beginning to think that because you are working with short clips they may not all have the same exact video properties. I've come across this before when working with short clips. The only solution is to JOIN them into larger workable clips, usually with smartrender off depending how much you plan to edit the video..

My cunning plan to import some video clips from a similar Sony at my local big box store won't work! It seems that the camera has to be hooked up to it's "dock" in order to transfer video. although I could buy one and return it later, I would hate to do that, even to Best Buy.

I KNOW YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO SHOUT IN FORUMS BUT I AM!!!!!

ok here we go firstly to etech
did all you told me to the letter and guess what????????????
IT WORKED!!!!!
i have a perfect picture and my sound is in sync
it does mean i have to go round the houses a bit but at least i can use smart render now which will save me hours and yet i will still have the quality which is what i was losing before if i did not use this function
the project was only 18 mins long but tomorrow will spend more time and with the same method make a longer one will let you know what happens

in reference to your comment on my small clips the i have no pause button so everytime i press the rec button and then press it again it makes a clip

to 2 dogs
i also did all you adviced with the following results
the sound was still out of sync i used the same files as i used for etechs
i dont know if this means anything but i did notice that the audio file when put back into the timeline was shorter than the video file
the playback started off in sync but by the end of the 18 video was out of sync
i again will have another go tomorrow
also is there any way to mute all the clips or do you have to do them one by one?

well all i can now say is a big THANKYOU to both of you for taking the time and effort to help me out i appreciate how busy you must be and i take my hat off to you for all the work you have put in to try and help me sort out my problem
i also thankyou for your patience with me especially the amount of posts
i have been putting on with one problem after another most people would have given up by now and not even bothered to reply back to me
one last thing thankyou to 2 dogs for replying so quickly to me in the first place and trying to help an old woman in her hour of need!!!!

i will let you know how i get on tomorrow with a larger project and can assure you that if it goes wrong you will hear from me
THANKYOU

It should not have been shorter. It should have been the same length.

So this is good news for you.
I think this will be the thing to remember.
Don't work with very short clips. I've found short clips can have what's called mpeg corruption.
I would take them and maybe render them into 20 minutes mpeg2 files using smartrender.
Then when you do want to edit a project use the large mpeg2 video files.

I suggest looking at the tutorial section (located at the bottom of the main web page), they are excellent.
When you have more questions then I would start a new post. This one is rather long.
one last thing thankyou to 2 dogs for replying so quickly to me in the first place and trying to help an old woman in her hour of need!!!!
You are younger than quite a few here.
"Has anyone seen where I put my keys?" - "Honey, when did you tell me that?" - "Ruth, someone called for you, I can't remember who"
My favorite - " I swear I never heard you say that! "

Good luck

I think one or two out of all those short clips has corruption in it.

I'm going to lock this thread, it's 5 pages long.
You can continue in your new post.
