DVD Burning Speed Advice

Post by k9vet114 »

In Movie Factory 6, when burning a DVD how does one decide what burn speed is best? Choices range from 4X to Maximum. Burn time is not as important to me as the quality of the final DVD. Is there a correlation between burn speed and final DVD quality? I have no clue...

Generally it's suggested to start burning at 4X and if they work out progress up to higher burning speeds if you want.
It usually comes down to the burner and media compatibility issue, along with how well your computer performs for transferring data, trial and error.
I have successfully burnt dvds at 16X.

I think a misconception is many think it's just the laser passing across the media to fast when burning a dvd would not be a reliable burn. Although this can also be true I believe many burn failures result from the computer not being able to hold a reliable transfer of data from the harddisk to the dvd writer at 16X.
So in my opinion it's a combination of both of the above.

When I burn at 16X I try not to access the harddisk that contains the source data I'm burning. Except for SCSI disk systems.
Most Video/Audio editing applications should use a 2nd harddisk (or more) just for this reason
