Newbie Question

Post by Basix »

This may be basic knowledge but I'm brand new to this stuff so any help would be appreciated. I have a stand alone DVD recorder and wish to remove comercials from some of the DVD's I've recorded. Can I do that with VS11? If so, after I edit out the commercials, add menus etc, and burn it back to a DVD-R, will the result be a lossless copy of the original content?

Yes, that is easily done in VS. You will be dealing with clips from a DVD so they will be MPEG2, a lossy format. However, VS has a SmartRender feature that only render parts that have changed (the areas you cut out), so quality loss should be minimal.

You should download the trial version and give it a test drive.

I sometimes use VS for exactly what you describe, and enabling Smart Render allows the creation of the new mpeg2* file, without commercials, in a fraction of the run time of the original imported from the DVD-VR disc.

I'd be interested to know if you experience the same glitch as me. When importing the video from the DVD-VR disc, VS gives it a long default name including the "tilde" character "~". If I try to use the file in my commercial-removal project, Smart Render cannot be enabled.

However, if I rename the file, removing the tilde character, Smart Render can be enabled.

* I use the "suggested workflow" whereby I create a DVD compliant mpeg2 file which is then inserted into the burning module of a new blank project for disc authoring.
