Captured Video Choppy
I am trying to Capture Video from my Sony DV Camcorder using the following settings:
Format: DV
720x480, DV Type-1, NTSC
DV Audio
Project Properties are:
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 4:3, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
When I start the capture process, the video and sound are very choppy. after about one minute of capturing the video begins to smooth out and record normally onto my computer.
Any Suggestions?
Thanks, Jeff

Forgot Software
I forgot to include the software I am using in my previous post. I am using Ulead Video Studio 11 Plus. I have downloaded and installed all upgrades, and patches for this Program.
Thanks, Jeff

You PC system specs would be handy. I bet you are using Vista
Despite that I have been experiencing similar problems... the first 10 seconds or so is choppy as if the capturing stopped for a split second...then it's all fine for the rest and I can capture for an hour no problem.
The only thing I can think of is a setting in Vista or my firewire cable (i'm using a different one than normal).

Is the resulting clip choppy, or does it just seem choppy as it is capturing?

Both in my instance... it's choppy while capturing. It's like it needs to crank up to speed... or playing games in a low frame rate (lag)Black Lab wrote:Is the resulting clip choppy, or does it just seem choppy as it is capturing?
My guess is that windows Vista is freaking out and suddenly throwing resources towards capturing and there is a bit of lag.

My SPecs
I am using Windows XP Home version.
Brand new Gigabyte Motherboard with all new technology, 4800+ Dual Core AMD Processor, 2 GB Ram, 160 GB Hard Drive.
Everything worked OK in Video Studio 6. It's just choppy since I upgraded to VS 11 Plus. The video is choppy during the recording and after Finalization. I thought it might come out of it after I finalized the video but it didn't.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks, Jeff

Are you capturing via firewire?

There are a number of things here to try, including turning off any uneeded apps/processes

I also notice that the preview window seems to show more jerky video when capturing than previous versions of VS. I can't say that I've noticed the effect in the captured video, however, when played back in say Media Player Classic, which can display some useful playback statistics.
If you are able to confirm that there is in fact a problem with the captured video, as opposed to just the preview display, I would suggest you try capturing some test footage with either Windows Movie Maker or the freeware WinDV, to see if the problem remains.

Continued Problem
Thanks for trying to help so far. My captured video when played back on VS 11 is also choppy. I've tried to render it into a video and the video continues to be just as choppy as when I captured it. Also, just a reminder, the choppy video is only captured in about the first minute of capturing. After that it seems to smooth out and captures fine. If I didn't need the beginning portion of my captured video, I would be able to edit out the choppy video and use the later captured video.
Also, I have always shut down any hidden programs from running while I am working with video, it always seems to help. Another reminder, that I just upgraded to VS 11 from VS 6 about a week ago and everything was working fine in VS 6. This has only happened in VS 11.
Again, thanks and any additional help is appreciated,
Jeff

Choppy Video
Ok, I captured 1 minute of video on Windows Movie Maker. There were some minor skips in the video, but nothing like what I am seeing in VS11+. Although neither is acceptable for me to make my movies, there seems to be 2 different problems with my software programs.
Windows Movie Maker has the occassional skips in sound and video similar to how an old LP record album used to skip when the needle was tapped.
The VS11+, the captured video is extremely choppy as if my computer is not strong enough to handle video. The strange part for me is that the longer a single video is captured, the better it gets in VS11+.
I don't think it can be the specs on my computer because I was capturing video fine in VS 6, until the upgrade to VS 11+. Anyway, the specs on my computer: 4800+ AMD Dual Core Processor, 2 GB Ram, 320 GB Hard drive with 8mb buffer. I just had this computer built and it is very fast. When I saw how well it handled VS 6, I just thought it was a good time to upgrade to VS11+. I downloaded the program along with all the extras and patches that are offered at this time.
If there is any more info that will assist, just let me know and I'll post it. I am getting frustrated but determined not to give up.....
Thanks, Jeff

Since you have similar problems with different apps I would look at your hardware. Do you have access to another firewire cable or firewire card that you can test?

Choppy Video
Since I have gotten no where and my video editing has come to a complete halt, I have started looking at Video Cards.
The motherboard I recently installed has ATI Radeon X1250 video integrated into the system. This is a new concept that I am told since AMD purchased ATI or vice versa. I don't really think that it is the hardware for the reason that I was able to capture video just fine in VS 6 on this system. The only reason that I am looking at video cards is because I have nothing else to do since I can't capture video at this time.
The video cards that I am looking at ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814125086 ) seems that it would really make my system fly for what I need it for. However, it carries a $200 purchase price that I feel like I really don't need to spend.
I just don't understand why I was able to capture the video in VS 6 with no problems and then not able to with the upgrade to VS 11+.
