Ulead VideoStuddio 11 Plus created HD DVD Won't Play

Post by minmin »

Is this product really able to create a workable HD DVD disc?
It there any one out there ever created a HD DVD that worked using this product? If so, how?
I have used lowest speed (which was 4X) to burn another HD DVD. The disc was successfully created. My LG HD DVD recognized the disc as HD DVD, but then it gave ERROR message and ejected the disc.
This is the second HD DVD I burnt and still does not work. (First one using 16X speed)
Does any one out there know this problem? How do we contact Corel so that they can correct the problem and thus give us a workable patch?
Someone, Please help!
Thanks in advance.

Have you successfully burned standard definition DVD's previously - perhaps using the same blank media?

You might try output to HD-DVD folders instead of burning a disc. Then, if you can successfully play the HD-DVD with a software DVD player on your pc, it probably points to a write quality issue with your DVD media.

You can run a disc quality check on the media using a program such as CD-DVD Speed, freeware, available from the Nero website, and also one of the items in the Nero toolkit if you have Nero installed. With any make of DVD burner, you can run a read test from the benchmark tab. The resulting graph should be smooth, with no sudden dips. Any such dips might indicate an accumulation of read errors. With NEC, Samsung, Liteon and BenQ burners, you can also run the disc quality scan, which can also point to burn problems. For Samsung burners, you need to enable the test by a small registry edit.

Without knowing the make and model of your burner, I would recommend that you stick to good quality blank media. For DL discs, only use Verbatim. For single layer, I get good results from TDK and Imation 16x DVD+R discs that have a made in Malaysia label and the best results of all from Taiyo Yuden premium grade 8x DVD+R, made in Japan, available online for not much more than discounted prices on commonly available media in local stores.

By the way, I just noticed that this is the THIRD time you've posted this problem - you should stick to a single post.

I would take the discs that don't play on the LG HD-DVD player and try to play them on a Toshiba HD-DVD player. If they play then you know the disc's are good.
If you burn HD-DVD folders first, then burn them as data to a dvd you MUST burn the DVD in Straight UDF 2.5 or UDF 2.6 format, otherwise they will not play in any HD-DVD players.

My HD-DVD's burnt to standard dvd (3X DVD) do play on the Toshiba HD-DVD players.

I use DVD-R and not DVD+R. If you burnt to DVD+R try a DVD-R disc.
If you did use DVD+R the Toshiba's may not play them correctly, either not at all or they will stutter.. They are very picky about the type of DVD+R used including the "BookType" Setting.

I have had no trouble making HD video on standard disc, using VS11+. I made no customizing changes to VS11+, but merely used the default settings. I did limit the video to 20 minutes. The SD discs with HD quality play on my Toshiba A3 HD player.

First of all, I am glad that all of you are helping me. Thank you all.
I will try my HD DVD on Toshiba HD DVD player. But I don't want to buy another HD DVD player or Blu-ray player. My LG BH100 Blu-ray/HD DVD player supports advanced video codecs, including MPEG2, MPEG4, and SMPTE VC1. It plays all the HD DVD and Blu-ray discs I bought from stores with no trouble at all.
How do I burn my video to computer first? I did choice out put to computer before burn to disc though.
I do understand that advanced content HD DVD disc realizes more interactivity in addition to the extension of audio and video realized by standard content HD DVD disc. Could this be why my player realized my regular DVD disc as HD DVD but not able to open the interactive menu?
I did choice to burn my HD DVD using computer to organize the files first and the burning was successful.
Would you think that change the disc media from regular DVD to HD DVD might help? If so, I should go buy HD DVD media. Only thing is that single layer HD DVD has maximum capacity of 15 GB. I only have about 3 GB of video so far.
I recorded my video on Sony HDRUX7 HD camcorder using high HD quality. Since I couldn't play back my HD DVD, I made a DVD disc and it worked. But I do want HD quality video show on HD TV not regular DVD quality.
Any ideas?

OK, I think this is what's happening.
HD-DVD can use the avc/h264 but not on standard dvd's. You would have to burn that to a true HD-DVD. Don't buy any HD-DVD media, I doubt that you have a HD-DVD burner. I don't know anyone that has one.
But, because avc/h264 is compliant for HD-DVD the ulead program will pass it through without re-encoding it because it's compliant. None of the players will play the disk (as far as I've attempted to try). Your player is doing the same as mine if you put avc/h264 video on it.
That is if your are putting avc/h264 video on it and not hd-mpeg2.
HD-Mpeg2 will work on the discs.

Again, goto "Share -> Create Disk -> AVCHD". Use that module, the videos should be passed through the encoder and right to the dvd. You must burn a dvd using this method.

If you want to make a HD-DVD 3XDVD you will first have to convert your source avc/h264 videos to HD-Mpeg2 video. That means they will grow almost twice the size of the original avc/h264 videos.

Hope this helps.
Post back & let us know how you make out. These posts help out many persons. Especially to know if the LG cdan playback avchd disks, they are pretty nice.

IT WORKS FINALLY! I LOVE IT!

Post by minmin »

Hello everyone:

Thanks to all of you. I really benefit from all of your advices and discussions. You make me think.
It finally works for me!!! Great!!! Now I love Ulead Videostudio 11 Plus a lot!!!
This time I tried not to create menu. Using just regular DVD-R, before burning AVCHD disc, under Setting and Options, in Advanced setting, I chose Create index file for MPEG seeking performance (default setting this choice was not choosen). Under Project Setting, Under Field Type, I chose to use all the options including Do not convert compliant MPEG files, Support X-Disc, and Two-pass conversion (default setting did not select any of these). Also, under Project Setting, in Change MPEG Settings, using Customize-Compression-Audio bit rate, I changed default 384kbps to 448 kbps. I am not really sure which of the above helped. I might use elimination process to find out or any of you can tell me to save my time and DVDs.
My DVD-R works great on my LG BH100 Blu-ray/HD DVD player!
I finally get my own HD video on HD TV! Great video and audio quality, exactlly what I want!
I am very very happy!!!
The reason I chose to buy Ulead VideoStudio 11 Plus was to create HD quality video using the HD video I recorded from Sony HDRUX7 camcorder. Since the AVCHD created by the software came with the HD camcorder did not play on my LG player as the manual mentioned it would, I had to search for something that would do the job.
Ulead VideoStudio 11 Plus works!!! Thanks a lot!!!
Now I am looking forward to my next trip and I am going to enjoy all the projects that follow.
Thanks a lot everyone!!!

Create a Menu, you will like the AVCHD disk with menus, they are nice.
Uncheck 2 pass encode, it will cause problems with avchd and isn't necessary because your source is avchd.

Here's some information to burn avchd disks in VS11+:
Under VS11+ Timeline Preferences to set encoding quality to "BEST".
Goto the Burning Module and burn a AVCHD Disk, "Share -> Create Disk -> AVCHD.
The burning module is like a separate program inside of VS11. The burning module also has "Preferences" so under Preferences assign another "Working Directory". Then under the GEAR Icon click on "Change Mpeg Settings -> Customize". I've been using:
Compression/Quality = 100%
15MBS CONSTANT bit rate, Dolby 5.1@448kbs
1440x1080 Upper_Field_First.

In the burning module click on the lower left Icon and make a custom template with these settings. Then when you click on the GEAR Icon your template is listed, just select it. Faster for future projects. Before I actually burn the disk I also exit the burn module, save the project and go back into the burn module. This way if something errors out I don't have to go through making chapters & menus again.

If your source videos are HDV then 18MBS Variable Bit Rate also produces a great High Def Video with a smaller file size.

My panasonic BD30 doesn't play AVCHD disks with menu. My PS3 does. If I use VS11+ to create a AVCHD disk and create the menu, my BD30 doesn't understand the disk as being an AVCHD movie. Not all BD players can play AVCHD with menu, I guess.

I would think something is wrong. The panasonic BD30 should be able to play a menued avchd disk. Maybe try a text only menu with no transitions. Maybe the unit needs a firmware update or changes in the setup menu.
Maybe a resolution problem? Not sure, like if you make a 720x480 avchd disk it changes the resolution output from the PS3 to the HDTV into 480p mode, so it switches the resolution on the HDTV from 1080i to 480p to play those 720x480 avchd disks. That's on a PS3.

The default avchd disks made from the ulead software usually are 1080i (interlaceed). I'm wondering if either it's a bad menu or your BD player isn't allowing an automatic screen resolution change. Maybe that's in the setup part of the BD30 or connection method, automatic up-rez yes/no, on/off.
Could it be your BD30 is connected as 720P or 1080P and not accepting a screen resolution change?

I'm making a dual disk now with 720 & 1080 mixed separate videos to play on the PS3. I'll make 2 disks. One with the project settings at 720x480 and the other at 1080i. I'll post back the resolutions the PS3 plays these menus back at, and if the PS3 switches it's video mode to match the source videos settings when playing back.

If you can put the HD30 into 1080I (interlaced mode), try that.

Burn AVCHD with Menu

Post by minmin »

:D Moderator etech6355, you are very knowledgeable! Thanks a lot for all you help!
I was thinking the same thing you suggested: to creage a AVCHD with menu. I will following your advice to burn another one. I have LightScribe DVD+R disc that I would like to use laser to label it. LG BH100 Blu-ray/HD DVD player plays DVD+R discs. It also plays BD-ROM, HD DVD discs, DVD-Video (8 cm/ 12 cm disc), DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW.
I will let you know the result.
Right after I bought BH100, LG came out BH200. It should work even better.
MPEG 4 AVC (H.264) uses less than half of the DVD space than HD DVD does. Great technology. :D
Best Regards

Thanks for your comments.

It is not a resolution or interlace problem. I can import a movie , straight from my Canon HV20, 1440X1080 resolution and burn 2 AVCHD disks with exactly the same settings. One with and one without a menu. The one with a menu will load but will not play on the BD30 or show the video menu at all. It will recognize the disk as a DVD-R AVCHD but will stay on "play' and a black screen forever. The same AVCHD disk will play on the PS3 just fine.
The disk without the menu but with exactly the same content will play fine on the BD30.

Looking at the file structure on the disks created by the VS11+, there is only one difference between the menu and no-menu:
The menu disk has 2 m2ts files on the STREAM folder. One is the video and the other is the menu. The menu is the 2nd file and I couldn't play it with my PC either. It shows the same black screen.

I used the VS11+ default menu but I had tried some others before.

The disk without menu has only one m2ts file under the folder STREAM. Plays fine on the BD30.

I really don't know why the PS3 plays the menu disk and the BD30 doesn't. I have already tried all settings combination on the BD30 to no avail.

Thanks, anyway

Sergio

I also checked the codecs on the 2 m2ts file and they are the same

The AVCHD disk with menu plays fine on my PC with WinDVD8. It must be something with the BD30.
