Having problems editing Full (1920x1080) HD files

Post by nigel V »

I am having trouble editing the video files my Recorder makes. The recorder is Sanyo VPC-HD1000. Each clip is saved to an SD card. When working in the editor I can add the file to the file list. I can open and view the file. If however i try to do any editing one of two problems occurs. If i crop (change the video length the file will not play. I am shown just a black screen. If i then revert to the original length the sound plays ok but the image is very erratic.

My PC has 3 G memory and a Pentium Quad processor. I am running Vista.

Hi Nigel,

are you trying to work with the files still on the SD cards? If so, you should transfer them to your hard drive. There's a lot of variation in the speed of card readers, especially the ones built-in to pc's, so copying the files to your hard drive would eliminate read speed as the cause of your troubles.

Your Sanyo records video using H.264 compression, so it will be quite demanding to edit. Just playing back H.264 encoded HD video will use a significant percentage of your cpu - try running Task Manager in its performance tab when playing back sample video to see how much.

I work directly of the HD.

If i just join the clips and burn a DVD it all works fine. It's just when you try and work with the full hd file

I think you will have to convert them into an editable format. They are probably in a MP4 container (have an extension of MP4).
I downloaded some Sanyo samples that someone put up on the web. I found it very hard to edit them.
If you post the properties of the source videos I'll post back the encoder settings you can use to export to a new editable mpeg2 video file.
You will be able to edit the hd-mpeg2 video much easier.
Not sure if proxy files will work later because in the end the program has to work with the h264 source directly again.
