Dificulty Capturing over 10 minutes

Post by geeveejay »

Can anyone help with a problem, I have version 11.5 Plus and I am struggling to capture video through a firewire and JVCGRD63EKmini dv
using vista home basic
It will start the capture OK but freezes after 10 plus minutes, I also get alot of "program fail to respond messages "
I thought it may be down to the procesor so I have upgraded that to a dual core 4800 Athlon x2 and also doubled the RAM, to 2gb but still I have the same problem, the video file is being stored on a virtually empty SATA drive (250) I have also gone through the manual checking hard drive settings etc.
I did have ver 10 installed with Vista patch and had the the same problems
The fire wire card was once installed on an older computer I had running ver8 and windows XP I had no problems with this using the same camera.
I am not particularly knowledgeable with this software and wonder am I doing something stupid thats staring me in the face!!

you seem to have everything set up. If it works for 10 min + then you would think it should work for an hour!

So...something is happening the VS doesn't like.

We'll have to go through a process of elimination.

I would try capturing with Windows Movie Maker and see how that goes. If that stalls we'll have to work out if it's a hardware issue.

Others may have a different tact

I ve tried the above advice and just captured 45 minutes without any problem at all in Windows Movie maker tends to suggest that hardware is OK?

I'm in the middle of a video editing project so can;t reply as often and as quickly as I would like.

So we can narrow things down to an issue with VS with your PC.

In VS what I would like you to try is to just capture 9 minutes worth... and let me know if you can edit it in a timeline without problems.

Also..I would like you to check what setting you use in VS when capturing. Look for setting like Type 1 & Type 2. It's this sort of information we would like to know.

I have tried editing a 20 minute clip I have captured using VS without any difficulty. I cant find where in the program I can change from type 1 to 2 I do recall reading about it but cant find it in the manual now!

Hi

From the capture screen, select the 'Options' cogwheel
where you will find the Dv-Type option

I think it defaults to Type 1, but worth checking

I can;t think what else to suggest.

Other than to capture in Movie Maker and edit in VS.

Hopefully someone else has a solution. :(

Just thought of something... when you launch VS do you do it from a desktop icon? either way right click on the icon and I believe there is a setting somewhere there to allow Vista to allocate more resources priority to VS11.

Try that

Thanks for the above advise, there something strange in that I dont have a type 1 and type 2 option From the options cog wheel I am given two options namely, Video Properties which gives me a current profile this set at PAL DVD HQ but gives a drop down menu with numerous DVD PAL options
I am also given Capture options this takes to Audio which is greyed out and Force to use preview which is also greyed out there is another option which is Capture to video this is ticked. These are defaults I have made no changes

With reference to program start, I do use the Icon, I have looked for an option to dedicate more resourses but could find it under the Ican properties.
At least I can now use the MS video to capture and edit it in VS, but its still a pain, when you have new software you do hope it will be trouble free, as I said before I have limited use of V8 and had no difficulty using it at all so much for progress!!

You are right it should work but I have since learnt that there are too many factors that can go wrong with video and no two PC's are built the same.

I have been lucky in that VS11.5+ has worked with very little problems and I capture, edit and burn with comparitive ease.

Hi

When you indicated capturing via firewire and Mini Dv I assumed you were capturing to DV Format.

This transfers the data from the camera to the pc without re-coding/transcoding.
The files are Avi ( Dv-Avi ) at 13 Gb per hour.
This is the best way to capture Mini Dv Tape.
What you have in the camera is what you get, no changes DV-Avi

There are no properties to set.
If you capture to any other format you have to set the capture properties.

OK

In the format box select DV
The options cogwheel should indicate the Dv-Type.

If the DV option reverts to Avi then you are connected to an Analogue source not Digital

Read my quick Guide for DV- Avi from the link below

Hope this Helps

Sorry about the delay in replying a member of the family had opened up the Email advising me of a new responce so I only picked up on it today

I did discover a setting error and now have access to type 1/2 I thought this may have been my problem. It is set to type 1. I tried a capture again but it failed as normal after about 10 minutes.
I captured a whole 1hr tape in windows and transfered it accross to VS and edited the video this way. The quality though is very poor. I have compared this morning with older DVDs I made using V8. Camara is the same!
I m getting ready to fire the whole lot through the window!!

What settings did you choose in movie maker?
Sounds like if you chose the default you ahve captured a wmv file.
This will be lower quality than the dv.avi.

10 mins sounds like the 2gb limit for dv.avi on the FAT file system, but this is so old and not used with Vista, unless your drive came formatted that way? It is a separate drive? Check the file system used on it. FAT32 still old had a limit of 4gb, so that's 20 mins near enough.

This is heavy reading

Set the file type to dv.avi in movie maker and lets see how much you can capture,

First, can you confirm absolutely that you have version 11.5...? Click on the About Video Studio button and copy down the exact set of figures given for the version you have... (Mind you, any version of VS should be able to capture to DV with no problem...)

Next, can you confirm you are trying to capture directly from the DV tape in the video camera, and that you are not using the camera as a pass-through device i.e. connecting an analogue camera or VCR to it to convert the analogue signal to digital and then pass it on to your computer for editing.

Third, can you go to the Microsoft DirectX site and download and install the latest update for DirectX. It is dated November 2007. Note that it updates both DirectX 9.0c which is used in XP, but it also updates DirectX 10 which is what Vista uses.

I will try and answer all th questions in the last two posts hopefully!

It is quiet probable that When I made my first DVD Avi file was not selected hence the poor quality, I noted it defaults to a best setting for display by the computer not AVI I have since rectified this and had better results, having captured in Windows and edited in VS only the screen ratio was out, this is prabably some thing I have missed.
I can confirm that the hard drive has only ever been used for Vista and is NTFS

With regrds to the version it is 11.5.0157.1Plus
I can confirm I am capturing from a DV camera to the hard drive via a firewire card
I have also downloaded the Nov 07 Direct X, and tried to capture in VS again it managed 2 minutes before freezing the best I have obian is 20 minutes
