DVDShrink - does re-encoding degrade quality before import t
With GoergeW's help I now import DVD ISO files back into MF4, but they do not look that good. When DVD Shrink 'encodes' them back into VIDEO_TS format should I expect a loss of quality? I would have thought that digital is digital and there should be no loss of quality. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks

It depends on how your going about it and at what stage that they appear to look bad. If your simply ripping the footage out of the ISO "as is" then what you see is an exact duplicate. Note that video made for TV will not look as good on a computer monitor as it will on TV.ruggy1 wrote:With GoergeW's help I now import DVD ISO files back into MF4, but they do not look that good. If on the other hand your ripping the footage and using DVD Shrink to make a smaller file then quality loss is inevitable. How much depends on exactly what your doing and the source. To avoid having the video get reencoded you need to mainatain the original attributes of the video.

agree with thecoalman -- it depends on whether you are actually shrinking during the extract, or if you are simply using "NO COMPRESSION", and just writing the files out to VIDEO_TS/AUDIO_TS Folders.
If you are simply writing the folders, it should be no different than what you were doing before -- which was burning the image to disc, then importing from disc.
If you are shrinking the original, then you could notice some quality loss depending on what percentage of shrinking you are doing...

It's always possible that MF is reencodong them, easiest way to tell is how long it takes. Or you can watch the progress bar. It should be relatively fast compared to converting footage from AVI.ruggy1 wrote:Thanks guys, I am just extracting the VOB files with no compression so I can re-author them in MF4.
Just for example if you have about an hour of footage, a pretty simple menu and your CPU is around the 2.8ghz mark it should take about an hour or less including burn time. If you have converted footage from AVI to disc you will be able to better judge. If you have faster system and/or are burning at 8x or above the time will even be shorter. the 1 hour that I'm using for an example is padded quite a bit.
