I am not sure what the Indeo codec has got to do with conversion of an XVid video, but then again, you don't tell us what you are trying to convert the XVid clip to. As far as I can recall, the Indeo codec should have been included on the VS8 CD or in the download version as well. It is required to play some of the sample clips which are installed (e.g. the flying bee).

XVid is a completely different type of highly compressed video like mpeg-4. So I guess the first question is whether you have that codec installed. If not, you can do a Google search for it as it is an open source codec and thus free.

But again, since we don't know what you are trying to convert it to, it's difficult to say whether you actually need the Indeo codec for the conversion. In any case, I don't know where you can obtain a free version (it normally costs, IIRC, around US$15) except on the VS8 installation disc or in the download installation file...

You could also try the freeware conversion program SUPER from www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html A lot of us here use it for conversion of video like XVid/DivX to standard formats like mpeg-2.

codecs

thanks for the reply
i was going to attempt to create an iso, but this codec message comes up before you even get to chose which output format, the files seem to play ok in ulead so it didn't make any sense why it comes up.
i had tried to use ulead to create .vob's for eventual burn to dvd but got a problem with audio and video getting out of sync, i had a previous post about that.
i tried super to create mpg's but the results were weird. the movie is actually 2 avi's. both around 700+mb, same properties as in the post. super created 3 mpgs's. one is 463mb and is the 1st half of the movie. the other 2 are the original .avi file names with .mpg appended to the end
so i gave up on that. i'm now trying super to create .vob's, i have dvd shrink which will burn those. i'm not sure whether to use the 'vob dvd compliant' or the 'vob (.ts/.m2t to .vob)' option in super, i hate to ask here since this is a ulead forum, but if you care to answer that would be great.

Sorry, I have never used SUPER to create .vobs so I can't help there. Hopefully someone else might know.

In the meantime, you might want to take a look at http://beginwithsoftware.com/videoguide ... guide.html which suggests a different program (which I have never used) and gives a lengthy, step-by-step set of instructions for its use.

NOTE - Making a DVD from a highly compressed format is generally a pain! (Any converting or editing of these formats is "difficult".) It might require many experiments with many different programs. (And in your case, your 200kbps file won't give you anything near "DVD quality".)

A couple of other programs you might find useful (both from the same website): SVCD 2 DVD (~$40 USD) claims to convert almost anything to DVD. SVCD 2 DVDMPG (FREE!!!) claims to convert almost anything to DVD-compliant MPEG-2.
i tried super to create mpg's but the results were weird. the movie is actually 2 avi's. both around 700+mb, same properties as in the post. super created 3 mpgs's..
SUPER is a little strange, but I'm not sure how you got 3 files out of two... If you are making a DVD, your output format should be MPEG-2 (SUPER shows it as "MPEG II") for video and either MP2 or AC3 (48kHz 16-bit) for the audio format. And, you need to choose the correct framerate (FPS) and resolution for either PAL or NTSC DVD, depending on where you live. There is a chart on this page that shows the specs for PAL & NTSC DVD.
one is 463mb and is the 1st half of the movie.
The file size is determined by the combined audio & video bitrate. Since MPEG-2 is less efficient than Xvid, you need to use a higher bitrate (and your files will be bigger). Here is an online DVD Bitrate Calculator.
...the other 2 are the original .avi file names with .mpg appended to the end so i gave up on that.
It's normal for SUPER to name the output files this way. You can rename it and take-out the .AVI part.
i'm now trying super to create .vob's, i have dvd shrink which will burn those. i'm not sure whether to use the 'vob dvd compliant' or the 'vob (.ts/.m2t to .vob)'
I think you want to use VOB DVD Compliant.
i have dvd shrink which will burn those.
Simply burning VOB files onto a blank disc does not make a proper DVD structure. You need to use a DVD authoring program.
i had tried to use ulead to create .vob's for eventual burn to dvd but got a problem with audio and video getting out of sync,
Converting the files to MPEG-2 with SUPER should solve that problem if you had one file... But, you may end-up with the same problem after you join two MPEG-2 files together...
