I am a very new user and am trying to capture video from an analog camcorder using Vidoe Studio V8. I have selected AVI for a format and don't know what to pick as a compression - UYVY or YUY2. In either case the files are huge - like 12 GB for 5 minutes. When I select "Software Compression" and go to the Advanced section, I have the choice of many compression codecs. What should I choose?
Before I spend hours capturing video, I want to be sure I'm doing it correctly.

Dick,
You need a capture device for analog video. Most of them come with internal hardware that can convert the analog signal directly to Mpeg2, which is the format you need to burn a DVD. I have used an ADS Instant DVD2 capture box for my analog tapes.
Some digital camcorders can convert analog camcorder output to digital AVI. Then, if you have a slow computer you can capture that to AVI files - or if you have a fast computer you can capture to mpeg files.
I strongly suggest that you read the Recommended Procedure in the top post to avoid problems (A.K.A bugs) in Video Studio 8.

Try the huffy codec , it produces high quality files in a fairly small file size. about 22-25 gigs per hour if I remeber correctly.
There is a guide here for installing and using the Huffy Codec with the ATI line of capture card. You can apply the guide to whatever card or capture softwre your using as they are all very similar.

For direct mpeg capture you need a pretty heavy duty machine or a card with a onboard encoding which if you can capture in AVI it doesn't have.

Amongst other things I have been converting VHS to dvd using VCR into Canon 750i dv camera as an analog to digital converter and then firewire to pc as normal. Capture settings are the same as if capturing from dv tape as its a digital signal once it leaves the camera ie AVI. Its about 18Gbs for 90 mins.
Hope that helps
