Format DV 720*576 is 4:3 - I'm use my sony vx2100 in 16:9 format.
HDV is 16:9 NOT 4:3.

HDV 1080i in 16:9 ratio is 1920x1080, not 1440x1080. Your cam shoots anamorphically in 4:3 to give you the impression of 16:9.

DV 16:9 is letter-boxed. HDV 1080i 16:9 is 1920x1080. If shot in 1440x1080, it has anamorphic compression, because 1440x1080 is 4:3.

Blame the camera for being 4:3!

No it isn't. DV is 720x576 or 720x480 regardless of the picture aspect ratio.

Exactly, that is what I said: it is letter-boxed. If used in 16:9, only the centre 720x405 pixels are used for the image, the rest being black. AFAIK, I don't think DV cams had anamorphic compression for 16:9. Both my high-end cams have letter-boxing (which I never use!) with the reduced vertical pixel use. Actually, I think it is bloody useless!

My camera will shoot 16:9 DV without letterboxing. It's still 720x576, it just changes the pixel shape to get the 16:9 ratio.

OK, some may have anamorphic compression!

My 10-year-old consumer Sony and 5 year old "prosumer" Canon both use anamorphic squeeze to yield widescreen.

Which ones letterbox?

OK having read up on it a bit, it sounds like it's a setting available on some cameras- you can either use full-frame 16:9 or letterboxed 4:3.

Although full-frame should be better because the whole DV frame is being used for compression, some cameras (Sony was mentioned) introduce edge artefacts when stretching the crop to fit the frame. In these circumstances you should, if your camera supports it, letterbox to 4:3 as the black borders will compress well, leaving more of the bitrate for the actual picture. Otherwise, shoot 4:3 and crop to 16:9 in the editor.

Not that any of this tangent helps the OP at all...
