widescreen dvd import

Post by spike2001 »

Hello,
I have DVDs recorded with mu samsung camcorder in 16:9 format.
When I import clips into videostudio 11 plus (trial version) the program recognizes these clips in 4:3 format... (24 bit, 720x576, 4:4) this happens even if I set project properties to 16:9.

Any suggestion?

If I play the original DVD on my 16:9 TV they really seem to be in 16:9 format...

thanks,
spike

How are you importing the clips?
With a DVD camcorder you should place the DVD in your DVD drive and then follow these instructions

Yes, we need to know the exact model of the Samsung. If it is an older model, for instance, it may not have true widescreen 16:9 but only the simulated letter box variety... :?:

I follow the procedure you step by step, but the final result is the same.

The camcorder model is Samsung VP-DC171WH

THANKS

First I would suggest to check on forums and see if there are any bugs with your particular camcorder. I say this out of experience as my JVC has such bug. The bug with my camcorder is that for some reason the wide screen flag is not set in the mpeg header so players do not know that it is a wide screen video. In searching for a solution I found that somebody had already written a simple application that can rename my video clips and also check the wide screen flag at the same time.

The reason your tv may play it fine is that if you have the tv set to "Full" it will stretch any video (or tv for that matter) to fill the screen.

maybe i found a solution...

I copy .VOb files into a directory on the pc
i rename those file into .MOD
then i use the program "SD Copy" to rename files from .MOD to .MPG and set the 16:9 flag

this way it seems to work: the imported file in videoStudio11 has 16:) aspect ratio. I still have to check the solution deeply.

With this workaround would I soffer any quality loss?

thanks

Hi

You need to confirm that the video files are indeed 16:9 and not 4:3 with a top and bottom black border added.

Video Studio does not always see the 16:9 video as it should and will display as 4:3.
Your video will look distorted.

Have a look at my quick guide, ( A look at widescreen 16:9 ) from the link below.

You will be able to identify the frame of the video file.
At least this will rule out the top and bottom black borders.

That is what I do with the exception of going from .VOB to .MOD as my camcorder already stores my files as .MOD. I've had no issues quality wise in going from .MOD to .MPG as we are not changing anything in the file, we are only renaming the extension and the correct flag is getting set in the mpeg header. Also I could not remember the name of the program but I am almost 100% sure that "SD Copy" is what I am using too.

I can finally confirm you that the workaround (usage of SD copy) is successful: yesterday i created my first 16:9 DVD!

A small (free) app called DVD Patcher can also change the widescreen flag in Mpeg-2 files:
