30-min video shows up as 7 mins on timecode ?

Post by Rosbif08 »

Hi, I've been using Moviefactory 5 for a few weeks and only recently started to have a strange problem with one particular clip. At the moment I'm making a DVD with the homemade videos from 3 of those little DVDs you film on with digital cameras (excuse my bad terminology - and I'll just add that I've been importing videos from both DVD Rs and RWs so far and had no problems with either). So I have three videos just under 30mins each that I would like on the same disc. However, with one of the videos I'm having a strange problem :

1 - When I move the Jog Bar to the very end of this particular video, it says the video is only about 7mins long, when it is at least 3 times that. So when I leave it to play on its own, the pointer has moved about 1/4 of the way up the Jog Bar after only 2 minutes.

2 - When I leave it to play and the pointer reaches the end of the Jog Bar, the timer stops at 6.53 with the pointer not moving at the end, but the video keeps playing.

3 - When I drag the pointer to different places along the Jog Bar, different parts of the video show up from what would show up if I let the video play on its own... so for example, if I let the video play until it reaches 5 minutes (which appears to be about 3/4 of the way up the Jog Bar), it plays a different part of the video compared to if I place the pointer at 5 minutes myself. In that case, it plays what is more likely to actually be 3/4 of the way through the video, but it still says it's at 5 minutes. Sorry, It's hard to explain !

4 - I tried auto-adding chapters to see what would happen... if it adds them every "1 minute" then it only creates 5 of them, rather than 25 which is what I'd expect. If I do auto scene detection, then it only creates 9 chapters which is way less than it should be. The red lines showing the chapters along the Jog Bar also don't represent what it shows when it plays back... though it does place the pointer in the correct place if I click on each chapter.

So basically I have quite a problem on my hands with this clip and as you can imagine it makes working with it very hard, especially when I join it to the two other 30 minute clips. When I do that, the two other videos take up the same amount of the Jog Bar each, but this strange clip looks tiny in comparison when it is of similar length. If there's anyone who can make any suggestions, I'd be grateful !

I was having the same problem with one of my videos (http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=28669).

Turns out the video file I was working with was corrupt. Probably one of the mpeg headers had the wrong duration set. I used VideoRedo to fix the video file and that worked for me...however, in my case, all it did was fix the duration problem. When I actually went to burn the project, it locked up after reaching 55%, so my video apparently had more problems. You can get a trial copy of VideoRedo that is fully functional, but only works for 15 days I think.

It has been my experience that the mpeg2 decoder in MF is a little less robust than some of the others (such as the one in WinDVD). Because I'll occasionally find a video that plays back just fine in WinDVD, but exhibits strange behavior like what you are seeing in MF.

Thanks for your suggestion dobs ! That has sorted my time problem out as well and the video's behaving just like it should on MF. Now I just hope it burns properly after what you said...

Sometimes, when using MF and a mpeg file is corrupted if you trim about 5 or 10seconds off the beginning of the clip (trim as much as you can afford to lose), then "Fast Export" the clip MF will re-timestamp the file which fixes the corruption.

Firstly for those who are curious my dvd burnt properly after the quickstream fix, so it solved my problem.

But now I have the problem that my free trial has run out... can anyone recommend some other free software that does the same thing as the "quickstream fix" ? (whatever that actually means)

Thanks for your help

I have the same problem but videoredo doesn't work with .m2ts files.
I wrote e-mail to Corel support team but don't have any answer yet. May be someone knows what is the origin of this problem?

Do you by chance happen to have Haali Media Splitter installed? If so, I've seen cases where that can also mess up the timeline in MF. I had m2ts files from my HG10 camcorder that worked just fine in MF, but as soon as I installed Haali, the timeline got screwed up. As soon as I uninstalled it, everything worked again.
