m2ts file support?
HI,
The web is full of people having problems with m2ts file support but since Ulead on homepage claimes full compatability I thought I would give it a go but it realy seems like it does not work. There is no file format in import video and when I try to import anyway I get an error msg. I have a Sony CX7 camera, Vista laptop. Can it be true Ulead does not support m2ts?
Why do you not have a topic on this problem or solution on your hompage, a lot of people have the same problem?

I am a little confused. The CX7 I understood to be a camera which records high definition video to a Memory Stick using AVCHD compression. More to the point that is a variant of MPEG-4 using the H.264 codec. M2TS, on the other hand, I understood to be a version of mpeg-2, and your camera does not use this format.
You don't give any computer specifications, but you need a pretty powerful one to edit -- and especially play back -- avchd video. A decent Core 2 Duo is essential, or a Core 2 Quad like I have (see my System button). You also don't say which version of Video Studio you are using, but VS11.5+ can cetainly deal with avchd video on a suitable computer.
VS11 (and, I think VS10 with patch) can also deal with m2ts video. It is certainly one of the supported formats listed in my version of VS11+/VS11.5+, and I am pretty sure I recall it being listed in VS10+ too. But I really don't think that is your problem...

etech -- can you clarify please. I thought m2ts was mpeg-2. I know it can be used for high definition avchd shot with hard disk cameras. However, I don't understand why the CX-7, which uses uses mpeg-4 avchd/H.264 as its format, could be said the produce m2ts/mpeg-2 especially when it films to fairly space limited memory sticks...

m2ts IS mpeg2. And I found a nice use for it yesterday:
Does anyone remember the old Sony MMV format cameras? I still have one, and while I don't use it much anymore, I still like it for its small size. It outputs .mmv files, which actually are m2ts streams. I tried to take a .mmv file and rename it to .m2ts, and hello.... VS11.5+ just accepted it without any problems

If you renamed it to mpg I think ulead would like it just as much.
Yes, weren't they first Sony cams that wrote mpeg2 video to tape?
The MicroMV format? Your as old as I am..............

Ken,
m2ts is a container used to carry video & audio elementary streams.
There are a few different formats that can be used in a m2ts container, avc/h264, mpeg2, V1, and many audio formats.
This m2ts container is in mpeg2 transport stream format. It only carries the video & audio streams to their destination.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG_transport_stream
The video & audio streams within the Transport Stream are called PES "Packetized elementary Streams"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Packetized ... ary_Stream
Somewhere on my hard drive I have a nice technical spec on the m2ts format. If I remember correctly you can put more than one video and audio streams inside of the m2ts container. What video or audio stream to playback is done on the receiving end (in the de-multiplexing stage).
The Blu-Ray disks I've made so far contain mpeg2 video and avc/h264 video.
Both these videos use a file extension of m2ts.

I just tried, and guess what... You are absolutely right. I remember to have tried this with previous versions of VS, and it didn't work back then. I had to use a m2ts to m2ps converter, and then I could load the videos into VS (used that technique for VS7 through 9). I just never thought of trying the renaming trick again with the new VS.etech6355 wrote:If you renamed it to mpg I think ulead would like it just as much.
Yes, if the videos are in mpeg2 format from a tape then they may still be in the Transport Stream Format (depends how they were captured).
Previous versions of VS didn't work with TS files, VS10 would convert them to PS before inserting them into the timeline, making a copy of the original file.
The Transport Stream container is really taking off with all these new formats.

m2ts file format
HI,
First of thanks for all the answers, I am amazed of all the knowledge out there!
I am a beginnier so I do not understand a lot of what you gurus are talking about, lets keep this simple. I have downloaded a trial version of VS 11+ version 11.0.0157.0 PLUS, I tried to update it with a power pack but that was not possible. I have filmed with my CX7 HD SP which results in a .m2ts file which I can not import in VS I downloaded.
1) First of all is .m2ts a HD file format (YES or NO)?
2) If I buy VS11+ with all latest updates I will be able to import .m2ts files?
3) There also seems to be a new VS11.5+ ay Ulead UK site, is that what I should download?
4) If I record in SD format on my CX7 it produces an MPEG2 file which I seem to be able to get into VS11+ trial. If I use SD is that standard DVD quality, and can VS11+ burn a standard DVD from MPEG2?
5)If I buy the VS11+ and get the .m2ts format in, can I burn a regular DVD and or a HD DVD?
Sorry for all the very simple answers but I am new to this and I am not that picky about quality, I just want it to work when my baby is due in 2 weeks...so I can send my parents a decent DVD!
Thanks for your input and I am sure there are other newbeies out there that would want to straighten out these topics!
Regards,
Fallenc

Beginner!!
1) First of all is .m2ts a HD file format (YES or NO)?
Yes, technically it can also be standard definition, with AVCHD cams it's usually always a high definition video file
2)) If I buy VS11+ with all latest updates I will be able to import .m2ts files?
Yes
3) There also seems to be a new VS11.5+ ay Ulead UK site, is that what I should download?
I don't know, maybe someone else can help or write technical support
