"Failed to initialize video capture plug in"

Post by Jenny Weisberg »

I have been using Video Studio, and love it.

Recently, every time I tried to open the folder DivX movies outside of VS8, it would shut down my browser. We unregistered "qdv.dll.qcat.dll." That took care of the browser crashing issue, but now when I try to watch clips on VS, I can hear words, but don't see a picture.

Also, when I tried to capture new video, I got the following message "failed to initialize the video capture plug-in. Another program may be using it or the file has been moved. Failed to open the driver." Also, my camera is listed in the control panel, but usually does not appear as an option on the Capture page. I also get a message that says something like: "Cannot find Object"

Even before this problem, I have had a lot of issues capturing videos from DV. I start capturing, and the recording stops in the middle. Or when I play it, it sounds like gibberish (and makes all files in VS sound like choppy gibberish) until I restart the computer.

Properties of your source files

(format= DV
file size= around 13 GB
where did you get it?: filmmaker made tapes

What devices are involved and their mode of connection?: panasonic Gs60 connected by firewire to PC

Project Settings (important): what does this mean?

Output format (file, DVD, VCD, SVCD): file

PAL or NTSC: NTSC

Error Codes (if any): see above

Product Version: e.g. VS10 or VS11+ VS 8

Thanks for your help!!!

Those dll files you unregistered are MS DV codec files. That's probably why you don't see a picture. Please read this: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=96513

A lot of recent problems seem to be fixed by updating your version of DirectX, from Microsoft. Please note that when you update it will not change the version number of your DirectX, but will update it nontheless.
Project Settings (important): what does this mean?
What are your project settings? They can be found at File>Project Properties. They should match your clip's properties.

Failed to initialize video capture plug in- some progress

Post by Jenny Weisberg »

Dear Jeff,
First of all, I really want to thank for helping me out. It is truly kind of you!

There is some good news and some bad news. First of all, the good news. There was some progress! I followed these instructions from the link you sent about reinstalling the latest Direct X and registering the DLL manually and I can now SEE my video clips!

Some of the problems still remain, however.
1. When I open the DivX movies file, it crashes windows explorer ("Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close") This was the reason I had removed the DLL in the first place.

2. I am still getting the following message when I try to capture video "Failed to initialize the video capture plug in. Another program may be using it or the file has been moved. Failed to open the driver."

also, you had asked for this information...
Project file information: is empty- all values are 0

Project Template Properties

NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3

anyone have any ideas? thanks! Jenny Weisberg, Jerusalem, Israel
