Video compression

Post by steveandbelinda »

I am wanting to upload to a webpage a video project that I made in VS 9. When it makes the file it is in wmv format. I was told that avi is more compressed and will cut it almost in half. Is this true, and what is the best compression format for using on the web, in the way of size as well as quality

AVI can have many sizes depending on the codec and the settings you use for the codec. AVI isn't a format but a video container file, the codec is the actual video format. Divx-AVI is the only realistic alternative for the web using AVI but would require the user have the Divx codec on there system. Most don't.....stick with WMV since it's compatible with nearly every system on the planet, at least the ones running windows.

You can make smaller files with WMV, when you go to create a WMV file look for the profile tab for different bitrate options. A lower bitrate will create smaller files, there is even an option for 56k. Lower bitrates produce lower quality video. The lower you go the worse it gets.
