I just read sjj1805's workflow document. No I understand things much better. There are certainly problems in VS11+ with creating very big video files. But for real projects there is no need to do that. The aim is to create a sharable medium (i.e. a DVD) and that can and should be done wthout creating intermediate files. Thank you Steve :D
