Need Help ASAP (file format issue)

Post by Forever »

Hello Every1, wassup?

Im kind'a video ameture, and i have encounterd a problem during the making of a new video.
and here it is, im using media studio pro v8, and i need to run files in "VOB" format, what's It's impossible right now.
When i attempt to do so, i recive a messege: "Unable to open file + location"

My only option is to convert the files by Nero or alike, into a known format by the MSP8, and it is taking too long, and catching too much space on the HD, + the resolution is bad after the convertion.

I need you'r help here, i really need to run these files with MSP8, and i need it As Fast As Possible.
if there's any codac for the program, anything you'll know that might help, i want to know.

Thank you for you'r help.

:-)

Welcome to the forums,

First you need to understand what a VOB file is. It is a container, format contained in the DVD-Video media. It is based on the MPEG-2 program stream format. It contains the actual video, audio, subtitle, and menu contents in stream form. If you were to change the VOB extension to MPEG or MPG it could still be read by most DVD players, however some do not support subtitles.

So in MSP8 you don't use the common insert video command to bring in an MPEG-2 encased in a VOB file. You need to use the Video Capture.

In Video Capture:
  • Go to the Setup Menu
  • Scroll down and Select Change Capture Plug-In
  • Change Capture Plug-In drop-down locate the Import DVD Plug-in.
  • Go to the Capture menu, or press F5
  • On the Options tab, set the drive/folders where you want the captured video to be placed, duration, if you want seamless capture, and if you want the video saved in the Production Library
  • Check any of the options needed on the Advanced tab. Once that is complete press OK.
  • You will now be presented with a Browse Window. Navigate to where the Video_TS folder is located, either on your PC system hard drive, or the DVD.
  • Once the Video_TS folder is located and selected, press OK, and the Import DVD dialog window opens.
  • In the Left Pane you will see a directory tree structure with boxes, having Title and Chapter. The Titles are Movie Clips, and of course the chapters are just that for each movie clip.
  • Place a check in the box beside each Title and/or Chapter you want to Import. You can preview them in the Preview pane on the Right, before importing.
  • Once satisfied with your selection(s), press Import. The video (MPEG-2) contained in the VOB files are imported..

or if you're in a hurry, you can try renaming the extension from .VOB to .MPG and then inserting it into the timeline. This sometimes works.

In Windows Explorer you should be able to change the extension from VOB to mpg or mpeg.

From this a deduce that you are using Vista. Unlike XP when you select "rename" in vista it highlights the name but not the extension, you need to select the extension yourself with your mouse and drag over it holding down the left mouse key.

You dont want to change the file type, only the extension. Open a folder window, go to "tools", then "folder options..." then click the "view" tab, then UNCHECK the box next to "hide extensions for know file types".
I'm assuming you have XP. If you have vista, I recommend installing xp.
Now you can see the little .vob in the file name. Change the .vob to .mpg and you're done.
