Fix for explorer folder opening every time computer boots!

Post by backert1 »

Well what do you know - I actually got a bit of useful support from Corel relative to videostudio.

I have two sets of VS11+ each installed on a different machine - one running windows xpsp2 and one running windows xpsp3. Both have the same non destructive but aggravating issue.

Each time the machine is restarted a windows explorer window (Ulead folder) opens nearly full screen. This is uneeded overhead and a minor pain to have to close every time.

Corel identified this as a leftover from the installation process that should have been removed but is not. The solution is to "run" the msconfig command from the start menu. When the system config utiility appears, select the startup tab (far right). Scan down the list of startup items until you find "uvPL" uncheck this box and click apply. You will receive a message that the change cannot be actively applied but will be the next time you restart. That takes care of the problem.

Only thing is, I don't like extra stuff lurking around. Anyone know hoe to remove this completely from the startup config rather than just enable/disable?

Once you do that, it no longer will be initiated when you boot your PC. I disable that sometime ago, however going into msconfig, I can still see the instances of it. It appears that mscofig will have an instance for every version of VS installed.
However it's one of those nasty little buggers that will be reinstalled, everytime you do reinstall VS. VS does not provide an options list of what you want to and don't want to install, while installing. Instead you need to do a little housecleaning afterwards.

Thanks for the thoughts on this. Despite my dislike of the Startup config clutter, I fear a clean uninstall reinstall when the rest of things are generally working well. No pain - no gain?

You will generally find the startup items that can be found in MsConfig in one of the following locations:

Windows Start button | All Programs | Startup

Registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Windows Services:
Windows Start Button | Run | services.msc
Then check the start up type (manual / automatic)

"uvPL" shouldn't be doing that, even if you leave it in the startup config's.

True...

are we sure here it's not the macromedia installshield installer we are talking about?

aaaaaah! I was so excited when I thought I actually got some usable help from Corel that I posted that info prior to confirming it actually worked. When I reboot the system after removing the check in "uvPL" box in the startup configuration - I now get an access denied error message about needed to be an admin account (which I am the only one on these machines) to be able to disable this. Then the ULEAD explorer folder proceeds to open as usual even though the box shows to be unchecked. (Perhaps because uvPL is truely not related to the problem) This explorer folder is exaclty that - a folder - not anything to do with the actual startup of the VS program when selected from the start program menu.

So - I still need to know what is casusing this to auto open on every restart. Is it something called the Ulead auto detector and can I uninstall or deactivate that? I do not see anything in the services listing for ulead on boot up other than somethign called Ulead burning helper.

uvPL removal

Post by aljimenez »

I read your post and was excited to get this fixed as I had been pulling my hair trying to figure out who was doing this. Instead of the fix your post suggests, I removed the entry from the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\

followed by wherever your uvpl program is stored. Use Regedt to find this entry. Your are modifying the Registry doing this and if you have never done this, be aware that you could mess up you pc. You need administration privileges to do this also... Al

Well what do you know - from lookin elsewhere, I found the problem is casused by installation of PhotoImpact 12. Removing it removes the proble (also the program as well). Now I just need to know how to disable the auto folder startup thinking from a photoimpact 12 point of view.

There is a small utility that installs with PhotoImpact called Ulead Auto Detector. It can easily be disabled, by right-clicking on the icon in your system tray, and selecting Options. Now in the lower left, uncheck the box beside Run Autodetector when windows starts up. Then right-click again on the icon in the system tray, and select Close.

It should not start again, unless you manually launch it from ~Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead Auto Detector...
