Transcoding

Hi

Can someone tell me exactly what Transcoding is and at what point it happens? I'm using VideoStudio9.
When I try to convert from VHS to PC via my camcorder, it seems to do it after about nine minutes which is a problem because the Video Recorder will carry on playing. Its not so bad when I transfer from VHS to Camcorder and then capture from the camcorder, because the camcorder will pause when its trancoding time and pick up again at the same spot. But its a bit annoying to have to put an hour at a time onto a camcorder tape.
There have been moments when there has been no transcoding at all and its played through uninterrupted.
So what does it depend on? I've plenty of harddrive space and memory.
Can anyone enlighten me?
