I'm having a recurring problem with VS crashing at 99% when rendering standard DV captured from a Canon Elura 85. It leaves the avi file open, which means I have to reboot in order to delete the file. It seems that VS fails while writing the file.
This happens most often when I have split audio with a wav or mp3 file on one of the audio tracks. It doesn't happen everytime. I have done some very complex video with multiple overlays and both voice and audio tracks without problems, but then I come across a project that seems cursed.
I have a couple projects now that I can't finish because I have not been able to resolve the problem. If I switch to a simple project, it works fine. Simple meaning only basic edits and text.
I use an HP with 3 gig of ram, dual processor 4300 at 1.8.
Thanks for any help.

You tell us you are rendering DV video, but what are you rendering it to??? What are your project properties. And when you say 'rendering', is that rendering to another file, or rendering as part of the burning process?
You need to be aware that VS has difficulty with certain MP3 codecs, particularly the LameMP3 one. You might want to convert any mp3 files you are using to .wav before you use them in the VS audio tracks.
It has also become almost a mantra with me over the past couple of months to suggest people first go to the Microsoft DirectX website and download the latest update patch. The current one is dated November 2007 and can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en
Note that it updates both DirectX 9.0c (XP) and 10 (Vista). The number of your DirectX installation will not change, but the patch gives extra functionality in a number of areas and corrects other faults in VS11 in particular which could be linked to recent Windows updates.

Thanks Ken,
I'm rendering to another file....maybe the wrong terminology. In other words, I capture SDV from my Canon - avi format - and then edit and create a new avi file.
Modified to say:
I updated my Directx 10 without any success. However, I figured out that VS was crashing when it attempted to replay the file after it was created. I unchecked the play after completion in the option menu and it worked fine!
I can gladly forgo the instant replay to avoid this problem.
Thanks

As I say, the version number will not change -- it will still be DirectX 10.
It does seem very strange, though, since DV is about the most stable of the video formats to edit and re-encode, especially re-encoding back to DV. Again, I can only suspect the problem might relate to one of your mp3 files added.
When you get to the 99% mark and get the error message, is a new icon inserted on your library pane? And if so, does it appear to contain all the project? In other words, the error msg could be something you could ignore...?
