Picture quality when capturing

Merry Xmas to all from the land down under.
I have just starting using VS8 and the capture picture is distorted and grainy and freezes up when in capture mode and this is how it looks when copied to dvd. I am using a Sony laptop pentium 2.66ghz, 488 ram and 80 gig harddrive heaps of disk space . Using firewire and have not had much luck with usb ports (picture quality is not very good using usb).
Have tweaked system as per manual but still no good.
Need help bad has I have run out tapes.

Are you capturing to DV format or mpeg? I personally use and recommend DV - it's much easier on computer resources and you get fewer problems.

Yes I am using the DV toAvi format and have also used the mpeg and it's giving the same results.
