Download or purchase the CD?

Post by GeorgeC »

I have been away from this forum for a while now and have decided to reinvigorate my interest in video projects. I have been using VS and DVD Factory for a number of years and have progressively upgraded to VS9.

I wish to upgrade to V11+ but I am a little wary of using the download method as I have in the past due to problems with registration and activation. My question is to ensure the smoothest installation, is it better to buy the CD or download the file and upgrade? I currently have the trial version installed and read that this may be the cause of some installation problems.

Thanks
Regards,
George

I would say buy the CD...that's my personal preference. There are some good boxed versions available on the net from reputable online stores.

There are a huge number of us who have the downloaded/upgrade version and installed and use it with no problems. The people who seem to have trouble are those who install the trial version then decide to buy the program. And they simply add the key into the trial version. That seems to be the source of the problem. Instead, they need to totally uninstall the trial version, then download a full version and install that instead.

I used to be someone who wanted the boxed CD edition, and I acknowledge that it is still useful in that it allows a Repair function which is not available in the download versions. The fact that you get a Manual with the boxed version is largely irrelevant these days, especially since it has become a miniscule flimsy affair. Downloading your own PDF version of the manual is far more readable! Mail costs and delays in getting the boxed version has converted me to the download brigade. But of course I immediately back up the downloaded files + serial number to CD...

(I also use a download manager to manage the large downloads involved as they can allow things like resumption from the same spot if your internet connection is interrupted for any reason... a bummer if you are downloading without a manager.)

The only thing you need to be aware of in getting the full download/upgrade versions is to ensure that Corel gives you three download links: the first to the main program files; then a second to 'extra content' (templates, SmartSound etc) which are essential to the full running of the program; and 'bonus features' which don't relate directly to VS at all and you can choose to load or not. It contains, for instance, a version of WinDVD software dvd player...

Thanks Clevo & Ken.

Clevo - I intended to buy the upgrade so was looking to buy online anyway.

Ken - My desire to have the program "yesterday" has always had me doing the download but I was one of those who fell into the trial/upgrade trap and multiple uninstall/reinstall failures, hence my reticence. However I will uninstall the trial and then download the full version following your tips on the number of links. Wish me luck!

Cheers,
George

Another question - can I uninstall VS9 before or after I install 11+?

To expand on Ron's reply, you can in fact have more than one version of VS on a computer, so could leave the VS9 installation there if you like. A number of us have many versions going back to at least VS7 so we can refer to them and help out on questions about those versions that are posted here.

That being said, if you want to save space, I would remove VS9 first. Some people have found that if they install a later version (in this case VS11), and then uninstall an earliler version, occasionally a shared file gets removed that should not have been. In this case, the Repair option in the boxed version comes in handy! Otherwise you would have to do a full reinstall.

As for activating the upgrade version of VS11, you only need to enter the serial number of the earlier version, not actually have to have it installed at the time.

I just noticed the Hot Fix - is this likely to be required for 11+ that I have just downloaded or will it be incorporated in the download?

I don't want to go through the install/uninstall process unnecessarily.

Any other patches/updates I should download?

George

As with ALL patches and updates, you should read the accompanying notes very carefully. The Hot Fix is ONLY to be used in a very specific circumstance that arises for a small number of users during installation of VS11. You ONLY use it if you have that trouble.

If you are buying the VS11+ upgrade, then as far as I am aware, none of the patches/updates is incorporated in the files you will download from Corel. So once you download and install everything in the first two files I mentioned, and everything is working, you then download FIRST the update patch dated 6 November 2007 (at the bottom of the patch page). This will correct several problems in the original program. Then you download and install the Hot Pack dated 8 November. That will add several new features to your program and update it to VS11.5+.

But at the risk of repetition, IGNORE the Hot Fix unless you have had the installation problem it was brought out to fix.

And good luck!!

Thanks Ken.

I did read the notes for the hot fix and whilst it quotes the error message, where it states who should install it, it doesn't specify only those that received the error message. Maybe the Sticky" could be updated to reflect that?

I will install the other patches after reading the accompanying notes.

Thanks again for the prompt replies it is very much appreciated.

I'm more of an "Instant Gratification" kind of guy. :D I went to the local Fry's and picked up a copy. $129.99 - 29.99(rebate) for VS11+

That's fine too! The only problem is that a lot of our users live in countries or cities where the boxed version is not available in stores and can only be ordered for delivery by mail at expensive rates...

Ken/Ron,

Will my libraries and projects be retained or do I need to back them up restore/import them after deleting V9 and installing V11+?

Thanks,
George
