Can`t edit videos from Casio Exilim

Post by norb »

I own the Casio Exilim EX-S600, which can also take videos. I can watch the clips fine in Ulead Video Studio as long as I click "clip". But when I put them on the timeline and watch them as "project" the videos skip and stutter.

I tried to find a specific codec for the Exilim, but couldn't. Anybody any clue how to solve this problem?

Do you have Instant Playback or High-Quality Playback set in the Preferences? This is common and normal for viewing using the Preview playback, without VS first rendering a temp video file, using DV or even one of the MPEG (1 or 2) formats.

Now you are using no, doubt a very highly compressed format, that is not meant to be edited, but just distributed. When previewing using Instant Playback, VS has to throw everything together 'on-the-fly". Even with a powerful system, it's going to have trouble doing this smoothly.

Suggestion:

Set the Playback to High-Quality. Then when you want view your progress, set a Preview Range, go to Share>Project Playback, and up at the top of the Project Playback window, select Preview Range. VS will only render (to a temp file) that part of your project you have designated as the range to preview..;)

Thanks for the answer. But this is not it as I have the same problem even if the clip is only seconds long and I let Video Studio render the project.

As soon as I watch the only seconds long project, the video skips and stutters.

Right-click on a clip in the time-line or library, select properties and please post them. It helps troubleshoot what the problem may be..

It's definitely a codec issue!

I can't import a clip from an EX-Z1000 into VS - it shows as being "unknown format". My old standby, Media Player Classic won't play it, although Quicktime Player will. I have ffdshow installed which can usually handle most formats.

The clip I tested is in an avi container format, about 3 seconds long and around 4.8MB - so I suspect it uses mjpeg compression.

Perhaps the camera came with a software CD which might have a version of Quicktime that could make it work.

Edit: on another pc, I can play the same Exilim .avi file in Media Player Classic, but still can't import it into VS. I also notice that there is a new Quicktime 7.4 update with important security fixes, so you might try applying that.

Edit: just applied QT 7.4, but makes no difference.

Okay, this is the video-codec that Uleads sees:

Mpeg4s Decoder DMO

Audio is this:
IMA ADPCM

Hmm, I don't have those codecs listed in Device Manager.

Here's what I have as Video codecs:

__________Image

and here are the audio codecs:

__________Image

How does this compare to the same listings on your pc?

I guess if you make a fresh system restore point first, it might be worth trying an install of the klite codec pack.... If it doesn't help, you can restore your system and at least suffer no additional ill effects.

Thanks for the hint. My Windows doesn`t show this codec either. I`ll see if I can find it somewhere on the net.

Hey guys, did you get anywhere with your problems?

Just thought I'd add, that it's been about 10 months since I last used VS11, where everything was working as expected.

I've just got a new laptop, and installed VS11 on the new machine. The only thing lower spec from my last machine is the graphics card. I'm experiencing the same slow stutter with MPEG4 from my Casio Exilim S660.

Last time I was using VS11, I didn't have this problem, so I'm a little confused, but I'm having a look into it. It only really slows down in timeline view, but adding transitions in clip view its slow, and general playback is choppy - as I said, it used to be fine, like really fine.

One thing I seem to remember from when I last used it, was that I used to have to convert the audio out of the camera, using a free utility. I can't remember exactly why, and I'm sure it wasn't related to performance.

Anyway, I'll post back if I get some answers. Please update me if you have found anything please.

Thanks

Tim
